Connecting with the Crescent via the Silver Star (92) in WAS

This is something I've noticed when trying to see how Amtrak can take me from Orlando to Birmingham...I realize there are straighter non-train paths between those two destinations, but I really prefer the train. Whenever I try to book this trip the Amtrak website only gives me the option to...

    Drug Busts On SWC

Oh! This happened to me! I mean, not the drug bust thing or having my money legally confiscated thing, but I have encountered the DEA on Amtrak. If you go back to my posts you'll see the exact day it happened, lemme find it...oh yes, on 11/13/18--the day the Southwest Chief was held so...

    Hurricane Dorian (2019)

Wonder what the chances are for another few days of cancelled Silvers...I was thinking of rebooking my trip for Wednesday but worried I'll just have to move it around again. EDIT: As of right now the 91 and 97 are showing as cancelled on Amtrak.com for 9/4 and sold out for 9/5 except for coach...

    Hurricane Dorian (2019)

Welp, there we are. Getting my points (for the trip there) and dollars (for the trip back) was an easy five minute phone call, so good on Amtrak customer service.

    Hurricane Dorian (2019)

Thinking about being proactive and seeing if I can move my departure to Saturday instead of Sunday...but also thinking just seeing if I can move everything around to avoid the hurricane altogether. I have a bit of flexibility here, basically the first three weeks in September to play with.

    Hurricane Dorian (2019)

Wonder how far in advance Amtrak will cancel the 97 on 9/1, if they do.

    Hurricane Dorian (2019)

My clever plan to take the 97 from PHL to ORL on Sunday so I could go to the Disney Halloween Party on Monday is looking less and less clever.

    Hertz Rental at Orlando Station

So the other day I noticed that Hertz says they have a location at the Kissimmee station? And...that station is about as close to Disney World as the downtown Orlando station is? This might be exactly what I'm looking for, particularly if they allow dropoff at the station. Has anyone rented from...

FYI: Hertz Chicago Union Station is closing

So FYI: the day I arrived in Chicago was the day after the rental agencies were closed for good. Luckily the Avis office is extremely close by--I went out the wrong exit on the way there so I had to walk a little more than I had to, but if you go out the Jackson Blvd exit and turn right on...

    Hertz Rental at Orlando Station

Interesting...I'd forgotten that non-Amtrak trains pass through there.

    Hertz Rental at Orlando Station

By the way--I appreciate the suggestions above, but for me being able to hang out in my comfortable, air conditioned car in the Orlando parking lot right up until my train arrives (within reason) is an irreplaceable luxury. I will be sad if it is gone for good.

    Hertz Rental at Orlando Station

Okay, so, whoever I just talked to at the South Orange HLE office--which administers the ORL station desk--claimed that they are, quote, being "kicked out" and the close is permanent. The mystery deepens...why would Amtrak kick them out? If my information is accurate, I mean. She had no...

    Hertz Rental at Orlando Station

Thanks for the thread move. Yeah I think the Hertz office that staffs the Amtrak station will also do local pickup, so there's that. I'd probably be in trouble even if the Amtrak desk wasn't closed since I'm arriving on Labor Day for my next trip...

    Hertz Rental at Orlando Station

(Weird how this thread is in the lounge, which I just noticed since I found it via a forum seach? It's not off topic from the main board...anyway I hope some Orlando folk see this.)

    Hertz Rental at Orlando Station

Old thread bump but I don't want to start a new thread for this... I've been trying to book a car here in both September and December and I kept getting the dreaded "PICKUP LOCATION TEMPORARILY CLOSED [DE556]" message...unfortunately I've been doing this at night, or on a Saturday (like right...

FYI: Hertz Chicago Union Station is closing

Ah, I searched for "chicago rental" and "chicago hertz" and didn't see anything. Yes, the closest Hertz office is at 181 W Washington, and they do offer pickup. But it would be even easier to just rent from the onsite companies...does the other thread cover whether Avis and Budget are also...

FYI: Hertz Chicago Union Station is closing

I was trying to make a reservation for early August but the Hertz website said the Union Station location would be closed then; I called the Union Station Hertz desk directly to make sure the website is correct, and not only is it correct, the location is closing permanently sometime after 7/15...

any advice for getting from Nashville to Philadelphia?

So it's not even a crappy station any more? This really does seem like the best way to get to Nashville from where I am.

any advice for getting from Nashville to Philadelphia?

Hope nobody minds if I bump this thread as I, too, need to get from Philadelphia to Nashville and back on occasion, as I do two or three business trips a year and Nashville for whatever reason is a popular conference location. Let me say at the beginning that I think the "best" way to get to an...

Southwest Chief was held for an hour today leaving CHI... (11/13)

...apparently for the benefit of people like me on the 6 hour delayed Capitol Limited. I'm grateful they did it, but also surprised they did because, I mean, I was under the impression they almost never held trains for connections. Apparently (after talking to the conductor) they did the math...
