How far from the Boston Amtrak station is the walk to the Boston North Station?

The walk between South and North Stations is pleasant enough using the Rose Kennedy Greenway. That said, it would be a long trek with any impairments. The connection between Back Bay Station and North Station is simple enough via the Orange Line and the indoor connection between the North...

Best routes to see Fall foliage-Eastern U.S.?

The Downeaster is also a good choice. Foliage Season in Maine runs earlier, but not as early as it used to. The Downeaster route has multiple trips making planning a bit easier.

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

Here is a good read about the Southwest Chief and it's route being safe for now. I am posting it here as they talk about the importance of the dining car, AND the fact that the Silver Meteor and Crescent loose their Diner effective October 1...

No, The Downeaster is a Northern New England Rail Passenger Authority (NNEPRA) train service. Amtrak happens to be the company they contract with to run the train. The schedules, fares, policies, AND cafe car caterer are all controlled by NNEPRA. Ken

    Disappointed with meals

Here is a recent breakfast on The Ocean, the food is heated in steam trays.

    Disappointed with meals

First the ocean meals are NOT pre plated, and yes the catered meals they serve are to me better than what is offered on Amtrak’s trains with traditional dining cars. Then again a good amount of the fare offered in Amtrak’s diners is pre made by sous vide.

    Disappointed with meals

I agree the Ocean model works well, the food is excellent, and it is served by a full wait staff. The food is reheated and plated on board as well.

Board at Boston South with Back Bay ticket?

The tickets, web, or paper, can be used at either station, regardless of which station is indicated, no issues, or worries. If your using ACELA business class (as opposed to first class), and it looks like a large crowd is there, at South Station you can always engage a Red Cap to gain first...

LSL Meal (ALB to BOS) & Luggage Storage at BOS

For Baggage Storage in Boston, you should have no issues, unless the Lake Shore is running very late, as the desk may be closed. Remember that the Downeaster trains arrive and depart from North Station so you will need time to retrieve your bags and make it cross town from South to North...

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

According to a rep that I just spoke to at the call center, they were officially made aware of the changes yesterday (8/1). The Amtrak website is supposed to be updated “shortly”.

    East coast February travel?

Not always this past winter was very moderate, with very little snow. In fact March had more snow than February. A good reason to visit in January and February is you can get hotel deals that you’ll never get at any other time of the year. Ken

Yes, we can agree with our mutual hatred on New York City.

    East coast February travel?

......and it is so good that Boston in no Philly. We’re superior in all areas that matter. Not to mention that unlike Philly we do not hero worship New York City, and when we want nice stores to shop in we don’t have to drive to the burbs, we have great retail right in the HUB, unlike Center...

    East coast February travel?

Hardly, Boston has emerged as THE city on the east coast. Philly ?? Really, not even close to our league. Further we have all the things that make NYC great (theater, museum, shopping, sports, the list goes on and on), but with a lot less drama. There is a reason why the population of Boston is...

    East coast February travel?

If your looking for Museums and History, Boston has no peer. For Museums the MFA (Museum of Fine Arts) is one of the nations finest, the Gardner Museum is a short walk from there. The Harvard University Art Museum is another not to miss. The Institute of Contemporary Art in the Seaport District...

    East coast February travel?

A few considerations for your trip. Seating on The Downeaster is reserved, but open as in no seat assignments . In February you should not have an issue in picking the seat of your choice. Business Class is offered on these trains for a nominal up charge. The Downeaster trains have a unique cafe...

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

Speaking of the Contemporary Menu, if you look at the Lake Shore Limited's Food Facts page, it appears that some additional options are being offered, including a couple of sandwich choices. The Kosher options (by advanced reservation) are also listed, it includes a pre made omelet for...
