    East River Tunnels rehabilitation 2024-2027

"Amtrak will also be combining the Adirondack and the Maple Leaf trains between Albany and New York City as a part of these service reductions." "In Albany, the northbound Adirondack will have an almost two-hour layover making trips to places like Saratoga and Schenectady longer. The southbound...

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

I have similar thoughts to you that the MBTA hates electric buses but for different reasons. I think the MBTA fears that one day someone would make them install rails and convert those lines to trolleys. The MBTA removed all the overhead power cables and rails of the old A green line route...

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

I always take the free shuttle bus from the Airport MBTA station to the Airport terminals. There is a sidewalk on the service road across from the station that you can walk to Terminal E.

MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

There is a pathway from the Airport MBTA Station to East Boston Stadium. You stay on that path past the tennis courts and parking lot under the highway ramp and then to the rental car center. It's a 5 to 10 minute walk.

This has to be the first time in a decade that an MBTA car went over 30 mph.

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

Look what Canada did to their passenger rail from 1980 to 2024. https://www.arcgis.com/apps/instant/media/index.html?appid=49cce9647b164c43aa5c373f05290c78

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

If you look at this map beginning in 1962 onwards I would have had the same conclusion. I remember the big Amtrak cuts of 1979 and thought it was only a matter of time that Amtrak would just be NEC and a couple of commuter routes our of Chicago and LA.

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

Understood. My point here is that at least the state supported routes didn't cost Amtrak money.

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

I was just looking at the numbers from 2019. The year Amtrak almost broke even, ($29 million loss). https://www.amtrak.com/content/dam/projects/dotcom/english/public/documents/corporate/monthlyperformancereports/2019/Amtrak-Monthly-Performance-Report-September-2019.pdf The NEC made $569...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

Capitol expenses are actually amortized out over several years depending on the expense. So if the $1.5 billion is amortized out over 10 years that would make it a net profit.

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

On the NEC Amtrak charges higher per-mile fares for shorter trips. It is driven by demand using dynamic pricing. In fact Amtrak uses dynamic pricing for their sleepers across the whole system. So say unloading 10 passenger paying $100 a piece but picking up 5 passengers at $300 a piece you...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

The capital improvements are over several years rewarded by the U.S. government. So that wouldn't be accounted for as a loss.

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

According to the report the operating expenses for the Auto Train is $102.2 million. The operating expenses for the Silver Star is $87.3 million. So it appears to me that the Auto Train would have higher labor expenses than the Silver Star. In fact the Auto Train has the highest expenses of...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

I don't think it is apple to oranges comparison, maybe green apples to mackintoshes. I fully understand the capital expenses of the NEC owned tracks versus the non-Amtrak owned tracks of the other routes. Amtrak has been rewarded with $2billion to make improvements on the NEC. Do you really...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

Never said that trains shouldn't be subsidized. Why does the Auto Train make $10 million while the Silver Star loses $50 million? Is it the extra 600 miles the Star travels? The Silver Star even has over 100 thousand more passengers. Every state subsidized train is an Amtrak loser...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

All of the state supported trains you list are losing money. The NEC corridor is hitting it out of the park making $234.6 million. With the exception of the Auto Train, which made $9.8 million, all long distance trains are big money losers.
