Possible revival of the Boston North-South Rail Link Project

As far diesel or electric in the north-south tunnel my understanding was that stopping at a station underground and embarking and disembarking passengers with diesel fumes is the problem. Keep in mind these stations will be far underground. Also EMU's can climb at steeper grades than diesel...

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

It's almost as if train travel is the most expensive mode of travel in the United States.

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

If I owned a Tesla or 2022 Mercedes then dropping $200 on a 160 mile train trip probably wouldn't be an issue. Amtrak definitely provides a service in the Northeast as I use it frequently. One area where it lacks is last minute travel or anything booked within 1 week of departure. It's too...

https://www.bostonherald.com/2022/12/01/lower-ridership-is-costing-the-mbta-fare-revenue-down-48-from-2019/ Ridership continues to lag far behind pre-pandemic levels, a trend that left the MBTA with a $28 million loss in projected fare revenue for the first quarter of its fiscal year 2023...

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

The thought crossed my mind. But no, I still would drive at that price. Very few people would pay that price for that particular trip. I considered it and decided it was not worth the price.

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

There is no commuter train between Wickford Junction R.I. and New London CT. That is a 42 mile gap. Oh, and I should have pointed out that typically this trip cost between $40 and $80 one way depending on the time of day.

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

I had to cancel my daughters Thanksgiving break Amtrak round trip ticket from Bridgeport CT. to Boston because of a scheduling conflict. I made the mistake of booking a round trip ticket, you can't cancel only one leg of a round trip through Amtrak's booking system. When I went back to book a...

    Three in a bedroom?

I have booked 3 in a bedroom many times. You have to call to book it. The reason being is that Amtrak wants to ensure that you are informed that the bottom bunk is small and you will be sharing. Otherwise you will have no issues.

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

If what you say about productivity and efficiency increasing with remote work then zoom is not going away with the dodo. I actually go to work every day and see the empty meeting rooms as people prefer to zoom call from their desks. The commuter rail into Boston is virtually empty for all...

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

I don’t know if the Northeast corridor will ever be the same. Business travel and working in downtown offices along with corporate meetings might be a thing of the past. Or severely limited. It’s all meetings remotely now and for the foreseeable future. Those packed early morning trains to...

Insider.com and businessinsider.com stories about Amtrak trips

There is only one government run passenger intercity rail service today. So it is essentially regulated. Airfare on the other hand has come way down by price after deregulation. I suppose if we only had one National airline in the U.S. then airfare would be similarly priced. I know I’m not...

    Ray Suarez Tweets About NEC

WW2 stressed mass transit. War rationing meant people could only afford to ride the rails. Transit agencies were maxed out and did not have a time window for maintenance and repairs. War rationing also meant that materials for transit repairs were scarce. After the war the railroads were...
