Pacific Parlour Car Permanently Retired February 2018

The PPCs are special for me and I suspect many others for several reasons... First its just really nice having an exclusive lounge car and dining area just for sleeping car passengers. Let's face it... If I dropped $1300 for one night in a bedroom and the car isn't turned the right way to see...

Pacific Parlour Car Permanently Retired February 2018

If it's a hoax.... it's one hell of a hoax. The notice I saw was uploaded on the internal Amtrak website accessed by station agents... memo signed by an Amtrak official who would have the title to announce such decisions. That's not saying it isn't a hoax I guess... because anything can be a...

Pacific Parlour Car Permanently Retired February 2018

I figured they were not just rumors when I saw a copy of a memo this morning with official Amtrak letter head and signed by an employee who would have the authority to announce such a decision. We are riding on #14(02) Salem to Seattle. Just heartbroken... but... again... no reason now...

Pacific Parlour Car Permanently Retired February 2018

Well... we have a friend who will be getting on the train we plan to ride in LAX --- so he can alert us if it's not on... and we're flying Southwest into Portland the next day so we can cancel and get air credit -- so it will be okay. But the internal memo I saw this morning specifically listed...

Pacific Parlour Car Permanently Retired February 2018

Just jumped on and booked one of the last runs. Ughhh.... with only 3 weeks notice and my employer requiring 4 weeks notice for vacation... we'll only be able to fly out and back to ride about a 6 hour stretch... but I guess better than nothing and we can be part of history, I guess. 2018 will...

Pacific Parlour Car Permanently Retired February 2018

That is correct --- last PPC trip will leave LAX on #14 on February 2nd... arriving in SEA on February 3rd.... then head south on #11 leaving SEA the next morning (February 4th) and arriving in LAX on February 5th. Trying to make a mad scramble to have one last ride --- but with flights what...

Pacific Parlour Car Permanently Retired February 2018

The PPC's will NOT be returning in March 2018. They will no longer run at all after #11 arrives into LAX on February 5, 2018. I am not going to post the internal memo here because it contains names of Amtrak employee(s)... let's just it's legit... on Amtrak stationary and given to atleast 3...

Pacific Parlour Car Permanently Retired February 2018

One of my friends who works for Amtrak sent me a copy of the memo last night announcing this. In the past couple of years, the PPC (and the Great Dome Car) were about the only reasons we had for riding Amtrak anymore... I am sure Ocean View will be next, too. Oh well, it's been a fun ride with...

Books about Amtrak and Rail Travel

My favorite books are Eva Hoffman's "Flashing Yellow Guidebooks".... they were written for most of the western long distance trains and tell you what you are seeing out the window of the train. She was an inspiration for me... and over the past 7 years... I wrote my own series of guidebooks for...

    Galesburg Loophole

It's been awhile since I booked an Amtrak trip... but. glad to see the good ol' Galesburg loophole is still around. Try playing around with dates. $108 for 2 people in coach straight thru LAP-CHI Only $86 for 2 people in coach if you buy a ticket LAP-GBB ($52) and then GBB-CHI ($34) Not...

    Cuts to Trails & Rails

Well, GaSteve... I said a program that basically costs Amtrak nothing... and that is pretty much the truth. We are talking pennies or less per passenger. I cant speak for the other programs but I did help manage the finances for our program on the Empire Builder, 2007 to 2010. Our docents...

Program dates are up on our website. www.dunestrain.com This link is to our 501c3 non profit that provides educational programs on trains and I have no financial gain from sharing this link.

    Cuts to Trails & Rails

That's Eva Hoffman... she is great and a personal friend of mine. She was actually one of my inspirations for writing railroad route guidebooks (we have 12 published titles) the past six years now. She isn't super computer-savy, so I actually have an agreement with her to sell her books on my...

    Cuts to Trails & Rails

Like anything that's volunteer I guess.. you're going to get some of that. Being the Chicago Coordinator for Trails & Rails (2012-2015) and one of the few safety trainers... I got to observe a lot of different programs and see that first hand. The quality of Trails & Rails programs varied...

    Cuts to Trails & Rails

I read last night in another post on here (the one about certain discounts not being accepted) -- major changes to Trails & Rails coming for 2018. The OP didn't elaborate, but I was able to do some digging last night and this morning -- and apparently three weeks ago the announcement was made...

    Thanksgiving Week Dome/Chicago

It was supposed to be on longer but got pulled a day or two early so the PA could be repaired. It's now deadheading on #7 to be part of the Leavenworth to Seattle WA Christmas Train. You can ride it there the next few weeks. Then presumably back to it's home in LAX.

    Thanksgiving Week Dome/Chicago

I only noticed two or three people all day riding because of the dome but I'll attribute to the lack of advertisement about it being on. Not sure why that was the case but maybe word will get out sooner next year on what days and trainsets it's on. Apparently I'm the chosen one who gets to be...

    Thanksgiving Week Dome/Chicago

Wow, that's a nasty cough there Thirdrail7, I hope you get that looked at. I have been busy riding the dome multiple times each day, but did make a quick video to post. https://youtu.be/pxyqW6rCwi4

    NARP's 50th Anniversary

We were just asked to narrate the afternoon private car trip on the Hiawatha on Saturday, November 4th... and then the optional trip to South Bend on the South Shore on Sunday, November 5th. Hope some people off the Forum are riding and will come out and say hello to us! This is part of the...

Heads up -- lots of private cars -- Oct 13-15 CHI-MKE-MSP

I thought railfans in the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Twin Cities corridor would like a "heads up" to the large amount of private cars moving through the weekend of Oct 13-15, 2017. Friday, October 13th will see the Silver Lariat and Silver Solarium on the back of #7 between Chicago, Milwaukee and...
