Rails and Trails Narrative - Can you hear it in the bedroom?

Being a Chicago Coordinator of Trails and Rails for three years... I would tend to agree with you. I really think the official national policy of Trails and Rails but forth by the NPS and Amtrak (but obviously not being followed or enforced by every group... see above post by who I presume is a...

Rails and Trails Narrative - Can you hear it in the bedroom?

More power to your group... but techincally if he or she is okaying all your commentary going trainwide... your T&R Coordinator is going against the T&R Standard Operating Procedures Manual put forth by Jim Miculka, head of T&R, and Bryan Mattox of Amtrak.

    Pullman Pulled their schedules?

Rumor is Amtrak was not happy with Iowa Pacific taking over the Hoosier State and so they jacked the rates they were charging them to tack the cars on to the back of 58 and 59. Instead of paying the higher 2016 rates, IP decided to just end the service to New Orleans for now.

Fresh air stops on Southwest Chief

I used to do Trails & Rails on the Southwest Chief and have probably ridden it 100 times or more between Chicago and La Plata. Fort Madison is almost always a smoke-stop... Galesburg is almost NEVER a smoke stop. I think on 1 run they allowed it because we were running very early in. Galesburg...

Rails and Trails Narrative - Can you hear it in the bedroom?

I was the Chicago Coordinator for Trails & Rails from Dec. 2012 until July 2015... for our program that operated on the Southwest Chief between Chicago and La Plata, MO. No, Trails & Rails programs are only presented in the lounge car. Volunteers are not allowed to make announcements train-wide...

    Blackout Times & Peak Rates

Very true, Jis. But, $5,000 in sleeping car fares still to reach S+. Money still better spent on a better overall experience on VIA or a PV chater.

    Blackout Times & Peak Rates

Wow, seriously?? Just getting in on this conversation. So, now, sometimes sleepers are going to be DOUBLE what was initially promised with the AGR 2.0 fare calculator? SERIOUSLY??? If that is the case, then it's even more reason to burn or transfer as many AGR points as possible... and as...

    Chicago Yards/Roosevelt Rd.

I heard the Roosevelt Road entrance to the Chicago Yards has been shut down indefinetly... due to structual safety issues. This is the ramp we walked down for our Gathering yard tours.

Jan 2016 NEC/East Blizzard (was How does Amtrak handle snowstorms?)

I am trying to figure out tomorrow's (1/23/16) departure of the Cardinal, Train #50. It was cancelled in its entirety yesterday to sales -- now it appears back -- but only running CHI-IND it seems. On Trainorders, someone mentioned it would be running as just 1 coach car -- but it shows...

Jan 2016 NEC/East Blizzard (was How does Amtrak handle snowstorms?)

There is nothing up yet officially on Amtrak's website (big surprise there...), but it looks like train cancellations are starting to trickle in. The Cardinal #51 will not run out of New York tomorrow -- and as a result -- will not run out of Chicago on Saturday night. It also looks like some...

Ocean View Deadheaded to Chicago on 49 today (1/13)

In Chicago or Beech Grove or somewhere else? Thanks!

Ocean View Deadheaded to Chicago on 49 today (1/13)

The Leavenworth Snow Train has come and gone already. It MIGHT be heading out to Reno/Emeryville for the Snow and Fun Trains -- if it's going to be part of that. It would be nice if it ran on some Midwest trains through as we didn't get it out of Chicago to ride this year like we did in...

Will you try for AGR status in 2016?

clearly won't be traveling as much after this change. Unlike others on the forum I'm not mad at Amtrak or AGR folks. They had every right to do what they needed to do and it was a good run while it lasted. However... I conversely will do what is in the best interest of our family. That's more...

    On The Cardinal

Took the Cardinal two weeks ago. Mixed reaction on the food. The meat sauce lunch pasta was great... so was the pot roast per my wife. The dinner pasta looked liked vomit and didnt taste much better. Breakfast sandwich tasted like McDonalds.

    BOGO on Texas Eagle

A special to celebrate track work completion. Not valid from Chicago to St. Louis where the track work has been taking place mostly. Makes sense to me... lol. Ugh, Amtrak. ;)

Amtrak Toys For Tots Train 2015 (with Ocean View Dome 10031)

Glad to have people like you (ThirdRail7) on the Forum. I am a little shocked and even embarrased that so many friends who work for Amtrak in Chicago and Milwaukee who are normally very reliable sources of info on things like this gave me some bad info about it being in BEE for a refurb. I...

Amtrak Toys For Tots Train 2015 (with Ocean View Dome 10031)

Now that Albany is done with #10031... put her on some trains out of Chicago for us to enjoy, huh? Lol... ;)

Extra cars on #7(01), but no Ocean View Dome

Thanks for all your insight! Guess it stayed in Albany this year!!! I still wonder why they didnt ship it out to Chicago as in years past to help with the extra capacity demands on the Hiawatha? Any insight into the reasons behind that since you have the best info it seems of anyone?

Extra cars on #7(01), but no Ocean View Dome

Curious why you think that?? Not challenging you because I havent seen it anywhere else... but every year for the past 5-6 years its been used aa part of the Leavenworth, WA charter trains.

Extra cars on #7(01), but no Ocean View Dome

Just confirmed... 6 Amfleets on the front of #7(02) heading to Leavenworth, WA... still no Ocean View Dome. Guess it's really missing or not coming out of Beech Grove! Enjoy -- this train will be in WI & MN tonight (Wed) and passing through ND & MT tomorrow (Thrs).
