How do I view the California Zephyr route map on google maps?

Thanks! I never knew this. Wonderful. I am zooming in on the Zephyr route from Sacramento to Reno and I am amazed that a majority of the track uses concrete ties. Wow!

Why do long distance Amtrak trains travel at very low speeds?

What is the average speed of the Coast Starlight? Is it around 45 mph because I don't think they can run at 79 mph all the way?

Can Private Railroads operate passenger service without government help?

Can Union Pacific bring back their own passenger trains? What is the likelihood that Union Pacific will do this since they own the tracks that Amtrak runs on? And they can make a profit of it since they own most of the rail in the USA. It would be cool to see a modern revision of the M-10000.

And was one of the reasons why BART uses wide trains and broad gauge track was because they didn't want the wind...

What will happen to Amtrak California when the HSR gets built?

What will happen to Amtrak California when the high speed rail between SF and Los Angeles is finished (eventually)? Also, would Amtrak terminate the San Joaquins because passengers would choose to ride a faster form of transportation (HSR)? And would there still be customers for the Coast...

Has there ever been a time when Amtrak would have more than one dining car in its long distance superliner trains?
