Most railroads, even Amtrak, used to put sleeping cars behind the diner. The mail, baggage and coaches were up front. This changed, for some unknown reason, in recent years. Operations comes first, passengers are an afterthought.
Had a very similar experience at West Oakland BART in the late 1980's. A taxi dropped a fare off at the BART station and I made it to the CZ with about a minute to spare !
I live 5 miles from the nearest Amtrak Station. I drive to the station Park & Ride or take an Uber. The local public transit bus service would be too slow and inconvenient. I agree that there should be far more emphasis on dedicated Amtrak Thruway Bus Service (California model) to connect...
It's been tried. I rode the "The Spirit," aka "The Medfly," a couple of times and found the overnight schedule quite useful. The overnight Thruway Bus 4785, that connects with Train 785, runs on a similar schedule and is still very popular.

Yep. It was the last trip I ever made with Jim and Zack, who were both killed in the Talgo derailment in Washington. They continued east on #4 and I caught #3 back to L.A. later in the afternoon.
