Dug deeper into my notes and this is the layout after they combined the two trains together in Spokane: (Back) MHC MHC 32044 Sleeper 31028 Coach + Baggage (Not sure what this means, I didn't make any other notes about it.) 34084 Coach 34004 Lounge Café 31525 Coach 812 34018 Coach...

    Seats Question

Also, depending on the age of your kids, you may be able to take advantage of early boarding and get a better choice of seats. Dave

    Parking at Atlanta station

When we lived up near May-retta we used the Atlanta station a few times. Fortunately we arranged to be dropped off or picked up so avoided the lack of parking. For trips where we had to park a car we chose to use the Gainesville, GA station (our trips were generally heading north). The...

    Misssing E ticket

Had the same issue with a trip that included a bus transfer. We had to call back and they emailed us the reservations with a bar code. We then went to a ticket office and they printed out the paper tickets for us. Dave

    Emailing tickets?

The agent that sent us the email was the one we spoke to the second time when we called back. The agent that we made the reservations with did not send us the email, although she said she would. My thought is that when the first agent tried to send the e-tickets (with a QR code) it was...

    Washington, D.C

Just a plug for our favorite hotel in DC, the Hotel Harrington (https://www.hotel-harrington.com/) It's about 1 mile from Union Station towards the White House. You can walk there, but I'd suggest taking the long way up the Mall or take the subway. It's a cool old hotel so don't expect a gym...

Scanner, Amtrak/Host Frequencies & General Advice

Not sure about the metal roof. It will either magnify the signals, kill them altogether or make no difference..:-) Just leave your scanner on channel 30 and wait. Unless there is constant rail traffic you may not hear much. I've used my Garmin Legend eTrex cx GPS on a few trips. Like you...

Scanner, Amtrak/Host Frequencies & General Advice

If you have a rail line 10 miles away, you should be able pick up the comms on passing trains from your house. We have a rail yard about 60 miles away as the crow flies and I can hear them on my scanner just fine. Just find the owner of the track near you and scan those frequencies. If you're...

Scanner, Amtrak/Host Frequencies & General Advice

I've used a scanner on most of our rail journeys. The trunking scanner you have is overkill since all you'll need are the 96 ARR frequencies which are not in digital format. I use a RS portable scanner (PRO-92?) with an earbud. You certainly want to use an earbud or headphones and not...

    Ticketing window?

ALB-CHI (LSL) CHI-KNG (SWC) KNG-LAS (Van) And then back again. The KNG-LAS connection is what requires paper tickets and is why there are no QR codes on the emails from AGR. I know we could have waited until we actually departed at ALB to pick up the paper tickets, but if anything was...

Luggage Storage - Chicago Metropolitan Lounge

Don't forget to tip the baggage attendant. Depending on the layover you can consider taking the bus to the Navy Pier which is fun. Dave

    Ticketing window?

We're back with all our paper tickets. When we first went to the station (not our departing station) I handed the agent all the emails I received with the bar codes. For some reason he only gave me the outbound tickets and I didn't catch that. This time we brought everything back and...

    Ticketing window?

No QR code on these since it involves a bus trip. We'll just make sure the agent scans all the bar codes this time I guess.... Dave

    Ticketing window?

No, not a question about the ticket window, but about the window for ticketing. Do you need to be within a certain number of days before your trip to be able to exchange your bar-coded email for the actual tickets? We went to redeem our bar codes for the tickets last week for a trip in late...

When a passenger train is delayed

It's been a few years, but on our trip from NO to LA on the Sunset Ltd, we ended up being 8+ hours late into LA due to leaving employees on a station, freight train priorities, dead engines and hitting a car on the tracks. The coach passengers were given a free lunch from the lounge car (I...

    Emailing tickets?

Actually we are pretty far away from just about anything where we live :) . We don't mind excuses to take short road trips of 2-3 hours to do simple tasks like this. We could wait until we head out on our trip, but we'd rather not wait until the last minute to get the actual tickets so...

    Emailing tickets?

Problem solved. I called Amtrak and they transferred me to a Rewards agent. The reason the tickets were not emailed was because part of the trip involved a bus connection (Kingman, AZ to Las Vegas, NV) and that cannot be e-ticketed. The agent did email me the bar code and reservation details...
