    Is Portland, OR Safe?

Possibly. They may be concerned about homeless people asking for handouts. They may be concerned about protesters calling them names or spray-painting their luggage. Or they may be concerned about paramilitary-dressed CBP agents refusing to identify themselves and chucking them into a van in...

Auto train derailment south of Deland 3/26

In another week, FL will be in the same boat. Wouldn't at all be surprised at some point to see people in places still ahead of the apex traveling to places behind it to try and bypass their own personal apex.

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

Let's also remember that the bottom was cut out of their market by, ironically, Amtrak still offering long distance train travel at much lower (relatively speaking) rates. So people who just needed their "Train fix" but were more budget-conscious still had a viable alternative. Once Amtrak LD...

Looks awful, and doesn't taste anywhere near as good as awful??? That'll leave a mark. ;)

    AU Texans (weather information)

It all depends on how much rain we've gotten leading up to the big event. If it's a week after Harvey, a passing shower is a big deal. If it's 2011 and the drought is so bad we're using ziplines to get across the cracks in the ground in the baseball outfield...

    Hurricane Dorian (2019)

Ballsy. Better hope this thing doesn't travel about 60 nautical miles farther than expected, we might have a repeat of the Matecumbes in '35.

    Hurricane Dorian (2019)

Slower storm will likely mean more surge, not less.

Heck, last time they rolled this out bait-and-switch-style they insisted on enforcing their new cancellation rules BEFORE travel, let alone after...

Whack the loyalty program, it'll only cost 3% of the ridership, and the majority will continue to ride. Whack the discounts, it'll only cost 3% of the ridership, and the majority will continue to ride. Whack the baggage cars, it'll only cost 3% of the ridership, and the majority will...

This is so myopic a view that I think my optometrist sensed a disturbance in the force... The contemporary dining is the end of a long train of abuses (if you'll pardon the pun) that have been heaped on the riding public, with no corresponding change in fares, resulting in a consistently...

No, I'm saying I've even stopped booking trains (I.E. Crescent, that I have frequently taken in the past) that DIDN'T have contemporary dining yet, in anticipation of the virus spreading to them before my trip and in light of the new, more draconian, airline-style cancellations policy.

Dammit, I guess I have to close my 4 train watching webcams I have going on my 3rd monitor here at work now, because I guess I was never a railfan in the first place. Now, where did I put that Emoji... it IS, after all, Emoji day. Ah yes, here it is.

Viewliner II Part 3: Bag/Dorm Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

This makes little to no sense to me. Hey Marketing, here's an idea - put the crew in them, and sell the extra rooms at some profit!!! That'll be $250,000 for my fee as a marketing consultant... ... ...

Advice for Son and me traveling on the Crescent

Keep in mind that this train is often late into NOL. If you're planning to do a hotel/sleep in NOL before quick-turning back the next morning, it may not leave you with ANY time to actually see the town. Even if you're not planning to sleep and spend al night on Bourbon St, that can be a rough...
