    Motivation for traveling by train?

At least its only for a couple of months. I have jury duty in New Haven August 4th and fortunately I can get the 6:53 out of Meriden; it's still running as a train. I guess it's early enough. I have seen the Amtrak bus a couple of times going towards Wallingford.

    Amtrak in New England

Keene, NH lost a great opportunity by letting Steamtown go, though they weren't the only ones involved. As Bradford G. Blodget and Richard R. Richards state in Iron Roads of the Monadnock Region, "Blount's dream to locate his Steamtown museum and live steam operation in Keene broke down amid...

    Motivation for traveling by train?

I'm always motivated to take a train. I live in Meriden, CT and my daughter lives in Milford so it's a straight shot on Amtrak/CT rail and Metro North. I can walk to the station or have my wife drive me. It beats battling traffic through New Haven. We have taken a lot of LD trains and plan...

    Motivation for traveling by train?

Here is a positive experience with timeliness. Last Summer my wife and I went from Connecticut to Florida on Amtrak. We then took it to South Carolina to visit friends. Then we went Back to Connecticut. This involved quite a few connections because we had no thru trains. All of the trains...

    Motivation for traveling by train?

Same with us. We took a long train trip to visit our son and his wife in Oklahoma. Right when I stepped onto the train, I felt like the vacation was beginning.

Roomette question (re sleeping on upper bunk)

If you bump your head, hopefully it won't be as bad as happened to Bud Jameson in the Three Stooges episode "Pain in the Pullman". I think he did it about ten times; it was quite a hoot.

Roomette question (re sleeping on upper bunk)

My wife isn't a very sound sleeper and she slept very well on the upper berth on our last trip. I think you have a good idea.

    Amtrak Employees and RPA

I'm curious, does anyone frequenting these forums know if Amtrak employees are allowed to be members of the Rail Passengers Association? I asked a couple of Amtrak employees yesterday while in New Haven, CT and neither knew the answer. The only reason I can think that they may not be allowed...

    Positive comments about Amtrak?

I have read in Encyclopedia Brittanica that the railroads repaid their land grant money and then some through carrying government freight at reduced rates. Even if this is not entirely true, the economic scenario of the 1950s to 1960s was much different from that of the mid-1800s. Railroads of...

    Positive comments about Amtrak?

If you can find the Book To Hell in a Day Coach you will read about some of the abominable service people experienced in the pre-Amtrak era. It's an eye-opener. There probably were a few bright spots but railroads were losing so much money on passenger service that some were trying to do...

Do members look forward to a train trip as much as people awaiting a cruise?

I like train travel so much that I even look forward to the train aspect of a trip to visit my daughter who is about an hour or so away by rail depending on the Amtrak/CT Rail connection with Metro North. It beats battling traffic.

    Entertainment on the train

I'm with you on that. It's hard to read books and do other stuff with an ever changing landscape unless its soybean fields ad infinitum outside of Chicago. I would like to go way out west and see some of that spectacular scenery. The farthest west we've ever been on a train is Oklahoma City.

You eat in your room? Why?

My wife and I prefer to eat in the dining room because we meet people from all kind of backgrounds and get to hear some fascinating stories. Also, the dining car is more open; eating in the sleeper would seem to make it a bit claustrophobic to me and there is no special ambiance to it. I will...

Riding the first transcontinental railroad (early 1870s)

Fred Harvey changed all that for passengers on Santa Fe. He offered a first rate dining experience and had food orders telegraphed ahead so that dining time was used efficiently.

    What is your favorite station?

The Lakeland, FL station is not only well lit and pleasant, but is also right across from a very nice pond. My son and I walked around the pond and saw plenty of ibises, ducks, a bittern, etc.

    Single person in superliner bedroom

I was surprised at how hard the bed was on my last trip. I may have done better to have just put a sheet down and to have slept on the seat. My wife had the upper berth and didn't say anything about the bed. That surprised me. Maybe hers wasn't that bad.

    Single person in superliner bedroom

I'm not single but have ridden as a single passenger in a sleeper and I think you have a nice idea. The roomettes aren't too bad but are a bit tight as you indicated. With the bedroom, you can even sleep in the upper berth and use the bottom one as a nice seat.

Negative long distance trip review article based lack of value and inedible food

I only see one of his complaints being valid, other than that, he seems exceptionally self-centered. His article reminds me of something someone quoted from a radio program. "Copernicus called, and you are not at the center of your universe."

What Does Amtrak Think of Us?

This may be a bit peripheral to your subject, but I talked to a couple of Amtrak employees about what I could do to influence Amtrak for their benefit and for better service. They said to write to your congressional delegation. They felt that such action would have the most influence. They...
