Heartland Flyer Consist Questions (Non-Pandemic Times)

Kansas has shown a lot more interest in funding the extension than it did under Gov. Brownback. In fact, the state legislature passed a law that enables funding of operations once service starts up. Kansas has also vowed to provide matching funds for a federal grant to pay for the capital...

Heartland Flyer Consist Questions (Non-Pandemic Times)

The Flyer's proposed Newton extension will have more intermediate stops than just Wichita, so it should have better ridership than the bus currently has. In addition, it will eliminate a transfer from train to bus at OKC, and vice versa at Newton, as those continuing north of OKC can just...

Heartland Flyer Consist Questions (Non-Pandemic Times)

I have a few questions concerning the consist of the Heartland Flyer. I know that the train regularly carried 3 passenger cars (two coaches and a cafe/coach) prior to the pandemic. I also know that the Flyer's consist is considerably longer during the annual Big Game Train to Dallas. My...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Other than the occasional Coast Starlight detour, UP has repeatedly said that they do not want any passenger trains on the Tehachapi Loop route. Even if they were willing to let the CS onto that route, there would be too many delays due to the heavy freight traffic on the route.

Single level cars on the San Joaquin

On a different note but still on topic. Will the two Comet car trainsets regularly used on some San Joaquin trains be replaced with the new Siemens rolling stock once it's delivered? Also, how many of the San Joaquin trainsets (both single and bi-level) will be replaced by the new Siemens equipment?

Restore Passenger Service to Southern Montana?

Isn't the new Siemens rolling stock Wisconsin ordered for the Hiawatha Service an add-on to the Midwest order? I presume some of the equipment in the Midwest order will be going to the Hiawatha, and Wisconsin's order was them fulfilling their end of the deal for new equipment on that route.

Number of Train Sets Used for Each Long Distance Train?

The fact is, even under Amtrak's full costs allocation accounting system, the Auto-Train almost breaks even. If the Auto-Train were privatized, it should show a profit because the new operator would be using the avoidable costs accounting system Amtrak doesn't use. The reason the original...

Number of Train Sets Used for Each Long Distance Train?

The reason I asked is because I've proposed three changes to long distance consists that would resolve the lack-of-equipment issue in implementing some of the long-time low-hanging fruit in long distance route improvements by using some of the new Viewliners combined with equipment that will be...

Number of Train Sets Used for Each Long Distance Train?

Does anyone know the number of train sets that are used on each of the long distance trains? I would like to know if Amtrak could be using their equipment more wisely to have a better LD network.

Siemens Venture Coaches: What Purpose Will They Serve?

As part of the sale, will Bombardier sell the designs for the Superliners to Alstom as well? If yes, then Alstom should be the preferred vendor for the Superliner replacements.

You've been appointed President of Amtrak, Corridor Version

Unfortunately, much of the former National Limited route from Dayton to Indy has been removed, and there's no practical alternative. Yes, you could divert to Cincinnati, and add another population center, but that would add way too much time to the trip. I just don't see the National Limited...

You've been appointed President of Amtrak, Corridor Version

The following new routes are needed to improve passenger rail in my home state (Illinois). All of the following corridors would have at least two daily round trips. New intrastate corridors needed include: - Black Hawk (Chicago-Rockford-Dubuque) - Quad Cities Rocket (Chicago-Quad Cities) via...

Richard Anderson replacing Wick Moorman as Amtrak CEO

I believe the reason the Sunset Limited doesn't enjoy the political support most other LD trains do is because the train doesn't run daily, which dramatically suppresses ridership potential. Daily service on the Sunset could mean far more political support from the districts it runs through...

    Amtrak FY2021 grant request

On page 29 of the document, I found out that Amtrak wants to change the law to allow a federal-state funding commitment for operating costs of new corridor routes for up to five years before the service becomes fully state-supported. This would allow states to see how well corridors will do...

Restoration of New Orleans - Mobile - Jacksonville Gulf Coast Service

Back on topic. It looks like the train will run to Mobile! The city council voted "YES!" on the new service. https://www.wlox.com/2020/02/04/amtrak-span-coast-after-mobile-votes-allow-rail-service/

    Nashville to Atlanta line

This will never happen. Don't expect to get a dime out of the Tennessee state legislature for passenger rail funding, in either capital costs or ongoing operating funds. The Volunteer State is just as hostile to passenger rail as Ohio is, despite both states having plenty of population to...

    Huge News from Virginia

Norfolk Southern's lack of participation in a required study is likely why they didn't mention Bristol in the plans for expanded service in the state. Btw, what's taking NS so long to come to the table to negotiate with VA DRPT for service to Bristol?

    Huge News from Virginia

This project will also alleviate one of the two major obstacles to the proposed new service to Bristol, VA.
