    Chicago station hotel

Also note that Uber service works well in Chicago with a reasonable price.

First time rider questions(recently retired/looking for adventure)

Unless you are planning on moving your household or are an extremely heavy packer, you should have no problem. You will have lots more space than in a coach airline seat. You can bring a couple of carry-ons with you to your seat and also put a larger bag down below on the lower level. The...

Senior Trip Itinerary & Questions -- June 2016

Congratulations on the upcoming trip! Just to qualify what I'm about to say, I'm a biker myself. I've bicycled cross-country a couple times with camping gear and loved it. But I find myself wondering about the utility vs. frustration/cost of you taking your bike on this trip. You didn't...

Western Amtrak Stop with easiest access to an airport.

Your decision will no doubt depend upon how much time you want to spend on the train and the cost of the airline flight to Hawaii. In any case, you 24 hour advance train trip is no doubt a good idea. If you choose Denver, I agree with the other posters. The RTD Skyride bus AF from Union...

    Denver Union Station Question

Yes, the biggest change for late 2016 or early 2017 will be the new light rail line to DIA (Denver Airport). This will bring more traffic to Union Station and create an easy plane-to-train transition. But there are already several light rail lines you can use from Union Station, as well as a...

    Denver Union Station Question

The new Union Station has just about every amenity you could wish for, including excellent food and drink. Unfortunately, as others have pointed out, time will be your enemy on that itinerary unless there is an unexpected delay in Denver. You will no doubt have time to dash inside (only a...

How cold does it get onboard?

My experience has been only in coach and lounge car. It is never really uncomfortably too hot or too cold. The only exception is when sleeping at night. Even in hot summer weather, I find that I need something over my arms when sleeping. My simple solution is to just always wear a...

what to do around Chicago Union Station

I posted this information a few days ago, but it was deleted in the unexplained server purge. So I will try one more time: Someone had mentioned Millennium Park an a destination, and I wholeheartedly agree. But now, right next to Millennium Park is a new park - opened just a couple weeks ago...

California Zephyr Extremely Late into Chicago 6/12/15

I happened to be hanging out in Union Station in Denver last Friday evening - no travel, but just enjoying the new surroundings and a terrific micro-brew from the Terminal Bar. I knew from the forum that the 6 was running at least a couple hours late that evening, so went over to the new...

    #6 CZ Very Late (6/6)

Most likely high water is a contributor. I've taken #6 Chicago to Denver several times, and June is often slow going in Iowa and over the Mississippi. And this year has been rainier than usual.

    Lower level coach ?

They should be available at the same price as the upper level. Unless you have a physical disability, however, I'm not sure why you would want to be down there. Less to see and more difficult access to lounge car, cafe, diner, etc.

Can I bring an iron on my carry-on?

I'm sure there will be no problem with having it in your carry-on luggage. But resist the temptation to try to use it on the train, because of its high current draw.

    Zephyr detour

Union Station in Denver is in the heart of "LoDo" which is the main pedestrian-friendly activity center of the city. It is at one end of a long pedestrian mall in an area full of dozens (hundreds?) of restaurants, bars, art galleries, entertainment, Coors Field, microbreweries, etc. All...

no more of coach trips for me

They announce a "quiet time" after 10 PM and ask people to take their conversations to the lounge car. Most people comply. Usually one person per car who insists on making and taking phone calls, however. In spite of that, I'd say it is generally quiet enough for most people to get some sleep.

    Did I leave enough time?

Yes, the time interval you have should get you to Union Station by 1:15 to begin boarding the Zephyr probably 90% or more of the time. Unfortunately, Uber is not allowed to pick up at O'Hare. (Uber X is significantly cheaper than a taxi). But you can get an Uber pick up in some of the...

1st Amtrak Trip Booked - Any Last Minute Tips?

How old is your son? It should a great trip. I'd recommend spending lots of time in the observation/lounge car and definitely have at least a couple meals in the diner car during your trip. The meals are quite substantial and filling, plus you won't be getting much exercise on the train...

Train cancelled... an 8 hour bus ride?

OP - when is your return trip? Is it also affected? 8 hours on bus may not be too bad with kids as old as yours as long as they had the train ride to look forward on the return.

    Denver station to airport

Transport from Union Station in Denver to DIA (airport) is convenient, easy, and inexpensive. Go to RTD-denver.com to look at the details, but busses leave from Union Station to the airport at least once hourly during the timeframe you are interested in. Cost is probably less than $10 adult...

    New York Food options

The Stagedoor Deli near MSG is good, but I believe that the Stage Door Deli in midtown is no longer in existence. But the nearby (and better) Carnegie Deli is still there. That is probably your best bet in Midtown / theater district. Further South, on Houston St, Katz's Deli is superb...

Questions about Denver station -- luggage and things to do

Yes, six hours will go by quickly. The pedestrian Mall on 16th st that someone else mentioned make for a very nice walk. Also a free circulating bus you can use if you don't want to walk all the way. Union Station is at one end of the mall and the far end is perhaps 45 minute walk if you...
