Atlanta temporarily lost checked baggage service - now restored

It was resolved, I believe. I was on the Crescent this weekend, and while in Atlanta there were people asking where to pick up their checked bags, with the staff directing them to the station.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Being sociable doesn't necessarily mean making small talk. It just means treating your dining companion like a human being, and communicating your expectations. If I was seated with a stranger, and the stranger said to me "Sorry, but I've had a really long day and just wanted to read my...

SSLs used as axle count cars

Google Maps or Earth is an interesting sources for some fun wild speculation on whats going on at Beech Grove. Its only a snapshot in time, but the satellite imagery is timestamps and relatively recent. As of the last imagery, which is credited only to "2022" there are 5 SSLs visible in outdoor...

    Union Pacific Curtails Fertilizer Shipments

Shame no business reporters have picked this up. Higher food prices will just get labeled "inflation!" and the story will get chewed up and spit out by the tribal zero sum politics of the day. So all we will get is more noise, misinformation, and acrimony without solutions. Instead of the...

    Silver Star Disruption (92/13)

I didn’t take any pictures, but during the engine change in DC I noticed that the trucks all looked freshly painted- bright shiny black without much weathering or dirt. Maybe they’ve finally cleared some of the maintenance backlog? Or maybe they were just cleaned and I’m being too optimistic.

    Silver Star Disruption (92/13)

On the Palmetto today. No coaches missing far as I can tell. Although they are all IIs, I thought they used a I for the shorts?

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

While we are speculating… there also may be modifications to the shell design for modern safety and crush test specifications that take up some of the previously available space.

    Double Days are back

Is it just points or is it double TQPs as well?

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

We were in the Texas Eagle for the holidays and were absolutely allowed to hang out in the CCC outside of mealtimes as sleeper passengers.

People stealing off of freights in Los Angeles

As a lawyer- I don’t know the facts here on the arrests or the decisions to not prosecute— if that’s even what happened. This seems like a lot of posturing and performative blame shifting because this issue has media attention at the moment. I’ve seen and written letters like that before. That...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

What is it with train stations in Miami and these kinds of mistakes? Just a festival of ineptitude all around. This is the second Miami station built with taxpayer funds in less than a decade that cannot physically accommodate the trains it was supposed to accommodate. Amtrak is still stuck in...

Who is drawn to slow train travel?

I don't know if this falls into "love of train travel" or "time to spare" or both, but we use train travel as part of the vacation itself. When you take a plane for a destination vacation, the vacation doesn't really "start" until you land, leave the airport, and get to your destination. It...

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

Seems pretty clear to me from the article that the service reduction is a scare tactic. They will go through with it if they have to, and are preparing to do so, but I doubt it will come to that. Every other employer mandate has also gone down to the wire, with most of the holdouts waiting till...

Short Consists of Long Distance Trains

We were on 21 Texas Eagle that left Chicago yesterday 11/22. There was a third coach but still only 1 sleeper and 1 CCC. The cafe line was crazy. I felt bad for the staff— clearly overworked and overwhelmed. We tipped a little extra.

    A Millenial's List of Improvements/Ideas

I don't understand the technical limitations involved, but if planes can get data service at 35,000 feet, I don't see why Amtrak can't get some level of wi-fi, even if its satellite based instead of cellular. Servicses like HughsNet has been providing internet service to these same rural areas...

    NYP - Checked Bags

Yes, that’s where you check your bags.

    Route Timetable PDFs returning? (2021-2022)

Or… its just that the timetables used to be manually updated by a single employee who used to do them by hand (and now has left). And the CS majors you are condescending about are trying to design a system where the timetables can just be automatically generated as a report instead of needing to...

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

I've been checking the postings out of curiosity, and they actually seem to get posted quite frequently and then taken down quickly as well-- presumably because they are filled? Perhaps each cohort is a trainee class? I haven't done much in the way of recruiting in my role, but I do imagine...

Electrical supply in Southwest Chief Bedroom?

Gaming laptops can use adapters providing 200-300 watts. The largest I’ve seen was 330. Workstation laptops use larger adapters as well, for the same reasons. High end GPUs (and to a lesser extent CPUs) draw a lot of power. If you are doing content creation/video editing you could easily have...

Short Consists of Long Distance Trains

My mistake. In New Orleans we are just as protective of the correct nomenclature. Its a streetcar, not a trolley. If someone asks about the trolley you know they are from out of town. My only experience with the cable cars in SF was as a tourist as a kid many years ago. Didn't realize locals...
