Questions as I wander west (Cardinal and Empire Builder)

A light nylon water resistant jacket will be all you need. You will use it more in Portland than Chicago most likely.

    Chicago Metropolitan Lounge

Here is a copy of my Review of the CUS Legacy Lounge about 4 weeks ago: Posted 13 June 2017 - 03:43 PM I posted a question here a few weeks ago asking about the benefits of the new Legacy Club in terms of seating priority. I am a senior so already get a degree of priority seating and was...

    Chicago Metropolitan Lounge

I posted a rather extensive review of my recent experience with the Legacy Lounge here a few weeks ago. The moderator moved it to the "Travelogue" section, however. You can still go there and read it - probably worth your while. For me, it was worth the $20. But I suspect the boarding...

    Gps. iPad

Does your iPad have LTE capability? If so, it contains a GPS chip and can be used as an adequate GPS. You won't have constant cell connections on your trip, but you won't need them. You can download maps from Google Maps and store them on your iPad before you leave. Then the GPS chip...

    2nd Trip - Empire Builder

I must be missing something here. The conversation seems to be centered around hair dryers, but the trip is only one overnight - and not even a complete night at that. Why would you bother with a hair dryer? Wouldn't showering at your departure and/or arrival locations be more convenient?

    Sleeping in a Sleeper

Getting the desired sounds (or lack thereof) to your ears while sleeping won't be a problem. A pair of earbuds with an iPod, FM radio or smart phone will do that for you. Use ear plugs if you want something closer to silence. My prediction is that your larger problem will be getting...

Chicago Union Station Legacy Club Experience

I posted a question here a few weeks ago asking about the benefits of the new Legacy Club in terms of seating priority. I am a senior so already get a degree of priority seating and was wondering how the Legacy Club seating compared vs. the standard senior seating. The responses that came...

National Dining Car Specials/New Menus (April '17)

Also keep in mind that most first class flights are only a few hours long with one meal. LD trains can be 2 or 3 days with many meals. So the incremental cost structure for AmTrak in terms of food, labor and amortized cost of the space you take up on a trip is higher than for the airlines...

    How is Wifi on Zephyr

The above posts are correct. Don't expect anything like continuous cell coverage - especially with ATT. Verizon is better in the Colorado mountains, but far from complete. Turn your phone/iPad OFF and enjoy the ride ;>)

Ambitious restoration and transformation in the Chicago area

Today's (I think) Chicago Tribune had a big article on this by their architectural critic. While a few aspects of the design got some positive comments, the overall assessment in the review was very negative. The critic seemed to think that many of the new public spaces and plazas would be...

    C.Z. and National Park

You can also get off of AmTrak in Denver and rent a car. From there to Rocky Mountain Park via Boulder / Estes Park is less than a 2 hour drive.

Sleeper and Coach on one trip

If the $$ aren't an issue, then (as others have suggested) just keep your sleeper and wander around the train all you want. There are almost always some empty coach seats if that is the experience you're after. And, the observation/lounge car is an even better place to socialize.

Chicago Union Station Legacy Club questions

I'll be leaving CUS next month on the 5 train to Denver with a coach seat. The Legacy Club is a new addition since my last trip, and I'm thinking of giving it a try - mostly out of curiosity, I guess. My main question for the group is this: I'm a senior and get priority boarding anyhow...

Best Places to Visit Along the CZ and EB

I'm biased, but since I live here and you enjoy cities I'll recommend Denver/Boulder. From Denver Union Station Boulder is a 35 minute bus ride. For a smaller town experience Glenwood Springs is good in the summer but may be very quiet in the winter during your visit.

Planning Denver trip. Need some suggestions

And, if you happen to enjoy fine micro-brewed beer there are several breweries within an easy walk. Wynkoop (formerly owned by our governor) is only a block from either the Oxford hotel or Union Station. And the "Terminal Bar" right inside of Union Station is definitely worth a visit...

Planning Denver trip. Need some suggestions

If you stay in the main "downtown" part of Denver (referred to as LoDo for Lower Downtown), you won't need to bother with Uber or any paid transport for probably 90% of your visit. I'm assuming you enjoy walking. Union Station is perhaps a 15 minute walk from Coors Field where the baseball...

Rental Cars in Denver Union Station

Definitely do not go to the airport. It is a LONG way from Union Station and the cars will be more expensive once you get there. Instead, try the downtown area agencies such as Hertz and Enterprise. Uber is available for an inexpensive ride to either if required.

    Power outlets in coach

Yes, you will always have an outlet available. Just fine for charging phones, computers, etc. But please don't plan on plugging in a hair dryer, hot plate or immersion heater.

    Questions re family traveling together

OP: You didn't mention how many kids you are bringing and what ages they are. Providing that info will help a lot. If they are 10 or older they might (believe it or not) actually prefer not to sit right next to their parents. Also consider that you will just not be sitting in your coach...
