    Crescent Delays - Tuscaloosa, AL?????

Sadly, looking at schedule keeping on this and many other LD routes, I sense that Amtrak's board of directors and most members of Congress want nothing more than to kill all LD trains, and all regionals that states are not willing to fund at 100%.

    Crescent Delays - Tuscaloosa, AL?????

xyzzy, thanks. I guess that's a consequence of the KCS/NS upgrade to the Meridian Speedway a few years ago. Unfortunately MEI-TSC-BHM is now a choke point for all NS traffic heading to ATL, and Crescent's schedule becomes the loser on the priority list. I only can hope for the best on...

    Crescent Delays - Tuscaloosa, AL?????

Thanks. I agree that's reasonable on occasion, but not almost every day, and always at TSC. Also, I don't know of any interaction between 19 and 20 at their meets. It isn't as if one was dropping off passengers for the other to pick up like at CHI or NYP. OK, I'm probably over reacting, but...

    Crescent Delays - Tuscaloosa, AL?????

Does anyone have information as to why the Crescent, both 19 and 20, are being delayed almost daily by over an hour in or around Tuscaloosa, AL? I have reservations in early June with connections at NYP northbound and a grandson meeting me at SDL southbound. I can probably negotiate a Plan-B at...

Silver Star Sleeper Meal No Longer Free

Trains News Wire is reporting that Amtrak is "unbundling" meals from sleeper travel on the Silver Star as a Pilot Program. Amtrak's justification is that surveys indicate more travelers would travel in sleepers if the price were less expensive. So free dining has been axed. Fellow First Class...

Another study of Gulf Coast rail proposed

20+ years ago there was a daily train between Mobile and New Orleans started for the Worlds Fair in NOL. It had three partly filled coaches when it started in August. It was up to five fully occupied coaches by Christmas, an increase of over 100% in just four months. Then during the week...

What Happened Near Tuscaloosa, AL (3/2)?

Both Crescents, 19 & 20, lost about 3 hours at Tuscaloosa (TCL) today (3/2/15). Does anyone have any information? Did NS lose a freight to the ground? Is there an AU Forum member on board?

    Question about Crescent

20 just departed NOL at 11:34. Now let's hope it can maintain its normal travel times offset by 4-1/2 hours, and not be bumped by freights all the way to WAS because it's out of its scheduled time slot.

    Question about Crescent

20 is estimated to leave NOL 4-1/2 hours late at 11:30 because the train set , yesterday's 19, was over 9 hours late, arriving this morning around 4:30 instead of 7 last night. It takes a fixed amount of time to make a train set ready for the return trip, and the crew is allowed a fixed amount...

    19 VERY Late - 2/25/15

Looking at the NYP departure time, I guess something happened at Sunnyside Yard to cause this, possibly an emergency equipment repair...? Then NS Dispatch had to insert 19 into whatever track space was available because its scheduled window had been lost five hours before. I feel sorry for the...

    19 VERY Late - 2/25/15

Why is the southbound Crescent running almost 9 hours late? It's only approaching ATL (5 PM). Even the Amtrak status maps site (dixielandsoftware.net) has stopped logging its progress.

Nol to nyp 20 crescent. With surprise

Is 8400 the prototype from the original Viewliner-I order, or am I thinking of another number? If it's the V-I prototype, then it's been around for about 20 years, which I ate in during the 90's, also on the 19/20 consist, and yes, it was a pleasant well-appointed experience.

    Crescent Viewliner Location?

Thanks for your replies. With the bag dampening whiplash, the rides ought to be fine, especially in #10.

    Crescent Viewliner Location?

I'm taking the Crescent in June and was wondering if the Viewliners would be behind or ahead of the coaches at that time. Every time I rode the Crescent 20+/- years ago, the Viewliners were in front and the rides were pleasant. But the few times I rode in the recent past, the Viewliners were in...

    Union Pacific Leads Amtrak #6(17)

When a private car special with AMTRAK engines came down our KCS branch, it had an AMTRAK engineer with a KCS pilot.

Normal For Sleepers On Rear And Coach In Front?

From 1988 until 1997 I rode the Crescent from Slidell, LA to WAS on business at least every other month. The sleepers, initially Heritage, then Viewliners were always up front, and I loved it because the ride was smooth and I slept like a baby. Then in 2010 my wife and I took the same trip...

    AAPRCO Mid-Term Activity

The AAPRCO (American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners) is holding a mid-term activity in Gulfport, MS May 22-25. http://www.aaprco.com The special AMTRAK powered train will be passing near my home on a rail line that hasn't seen a passenger train in more than 60 years and I would...

    NOL/LAX/NOL - Great Trip

I forgot to add that I had lunch at Phillipe's near LAX before boarding #2 on Sunday. The French Dip (lamb) was excellent. In fact, another of my grandson's relatives who was with us said it was the best French Dip (pork) she had ever tasted. She grew up in Germany and lived throughout Europe...

    NOL/LAX/NOL - Great Trip

Jim, Brian said he was training Diego so that he (Brian) could retire in 2 years, but that was said with a smirk. It's possible that you are correct about training extra SCAs to staff daily trains in the spring....dunno?

Is there long term parking at New Orleans station?

I was told this by the attendent of the Post Office Manager's parking lot, who had nothing to gain or lose by telling me this. She had been the attendent there for a long time, and had received her information from other parking lot attendents in the immediate area, and from the police assigned...
