    Crescent discussion

A friend sent me a photo of ATK diner 68022 on #20 leaving NOL today. I hope this is for real. I'll be on #20 this coming Thursday, 5/11. My prayers for diner menu meals, especially "Dinner In The Diner", with apologies to the writers and performers of Chattanooga Choo-Choo.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Please expand on this statement, and your information source. I'm reserved on the Crescent 5/11 and 5/15. I would love to think that I might have a seat in a diner with table mates, as I enjoyed for 35 years, until Flex.

    Current Downeaster discussion

The comments about abiding by local liquor laws reminds me of the ultimate absurdity, When flying from Atlanta to Los Angeles in the early 1960's, all aisle beverage carts with liquor aboard had to be removed from the aisle, stowed and locked before we crossed above the Oklahoma state line while...

New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

Mississippi also. 25-30 years ago, my wife observed a similar stupid incident from her fifth floor office above the Gulfport HWY 49 CSX crossing. The gates had lowered for a KCS-CSX interchange. The KCS train was approaching the crossing at 4-5 mph. The driver of a semi-trailer loaded with grain...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I only hope that I'll be allowed eat my meals, regardless Flex of Real, in a real diner on 20/19 over the May 14th weekend. My last trip six months ago on 20/19 being forced(!) to eat marginally warm Flex in my roomette was unpleasant. Though I was allowed to go to the snack bar for bourbon. LOL...

Any rumors as to when service will begin?

Is there any information on the NOL/MOB schedules and start date?

    1976 rolling stock

I rode the CONO in the early 1970's using the pre-ATK IC fleet. domes, sleepers and all. IIRC, we were led by IC E-units. Even used CHI's Central Station.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

An agent just told me she believes that "real" dining has been, or is about to be resumed on the Crescent. Can anyone confirm this? I understand that daily Crescent service will resume on 10/2. Perhaps dining car service also will resume at that time. 🤞

    Crescent Status, 3/30/22

Thanks. I wasn't aware of these cutbacks. I hope they don't interfere with my reservations on 58/59 in May. Sadly, it appears the downfall of our economy has gone beyond using the Pandemic as an excuse. I say no more as it's beyond the bylaws of our forum.

    Crescent Status, 3/30/22

I don't see anything on Amtrak Status Maps (dixielandsoftware.net) for the Crescent, #19 & #20, 6:28 EDT, at 3/30/2022. There should be four trains in route, 19 approaching WAS, 19 approaching MEI, 20 approaching ATL, and 20 approaching NYP. There is no info on the Amtrak website. Does anyone...

Amtrak goes straight to STB to restore Gulf Coast service.

The following was reported by local TV yesterday. - Amtrak confirmed it is hiring crews for the startup of New Orleans/Mobile service. Several of the crews have already been hired. - Amtrak has taken over responsibility for improving the four stops in Mississippi, Bay St. Louis, Gulfport...

Amtrak can be so good and so bad - all in one day!

When writing any site, before hitting Send, I Select All, select Copy, then Send. That way, if anything goes wrong, I have it on the Scratchpad.

    Travel to Chicago via Amtrak

It can't be enforced. Do whatever you are comfortable with. If you're fully vaxed, fine. If you're not, fine also. Being unvaxed was your decision. But don't expect me to sit next you if I have that choice.

    Tall people Fitting in Roomettes

I'm 6'2", 210#. I've enjoyed Viewliner and Superliner Roomettes since 1990-ish, and traditional berths since 1945. I've slept with bended knees since the 1940;s because they didn't know how to spell Kingsize back then. We make do, Army cots, sleeping bags, boat berths, etc., you can fall asleep...

    Travel to Chicago via Amtrak

Thanks Josh. I hope to visit CHI in the spring once their weather becomes more considerate of old aching joints. I'll take CONO when STB finally whups CSX up side their head and approves the twice-daily NOL/MOB roundtrips. BTW, not only am I fully vaxed, but boosted as well. I also got a...

Most interesting encounter(s) on a train

I had a delightful experience with a volunteer area nature guide on the Sunset years ago. He boarded somewhere in central Texas and got off in El Paso. His lectures and Q&A sessions in the Lounge were fascinating. What was most interesting were our private conversations afterwards. Aside from...

Watching the Weather from a train

In May 2010 the WB SL was stopped somewhere in west Texas because of a severe thunderstorm ahead with probability of tornados. 15 or 20 minutes after restarting we passed a few miles of deep water on the ground with ditches still overflowing. There was no evidence of tornados or high winds...
