    CZ to CS

If you're looking to just spend the night, then the Hyatt House Hotel (previously mentioned), just across the tracks from the Amtrak station, is the way to go. Ultra-convenient. I stayed there when it was still a Woodfin Hotel and it was very very convenient and quite nice. There is a large...

    Portland station

I have to agree with the others that the cold dinner out of Portland is wonderful. It is from a gourmet restarurant in Porland and is very nice. We had a choice of (as I remember) salmon salad, chicken salad or roast beef salad. We both had salmon and it was terrific. We had bought a bottle...

    flag stop

My understanding is that if no one has a reservation to board the train at a flag stop (and assuming that no one is deboarding), the train will not stop at a flag stop -- that is the definition of a flag stop. However, if you have a reservation to board at a flag stop, the train will remain at...

    New Amtrak Cancellation/Refund Policy

Wow, based on my experience with airlines, the new Amtrak policy is still much more relaxed. Southwest will give credit towards a future flight, but all the other airlines I fly charge hefty fees for even the slightest change in itinerary and none will refund the fare.

    Emeryville- SF bus

The bus will definitely wait if the train is late, but it won't necessarily be there if the train is early. Last time we arrived at EMY about 30 minutes early and the bus was not there until a few minutes before the schedeuled arrival time.

    Down stairs luggage rack

There are limits for the size of carry-on bags; they are avaiable at the Amtrak website. The limits are rarely enforced, but you might be required to check if the bag is way way way over the limits.

    Amtrak California Buses

I've taken the bus from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe, and it wasn't bad at all. Not the train but nothing is. Scenery was beautiful. Seats were comfortable. Driver was friendly. Not too many people on the bus, so lots of room to spread out. I imagine that sleeping would be about like it is...

    Sleeping compartment

I am not sure it is possible to reserve "a room that faces the direction of travel." My experience has been that cars can be faced either way and that it is impossible to know that in advance.

    TE running late

I'm taking the Sunset/Texas Eagle tomorrow (Tuesday) evening from Tucson to Los Angeles. SL is on time, but TE is running about 3-1/2 hours behind schedule. Will that time be made up tonight in San Antonio?

    SWC #4 from Los Angeles

Reservations are taken on board. Dinner service starts at about Fullerton in my experience. '

    Hair Dryers??

I recall reading in old posts that the electrical outlets in Superliner roomettes lack sufficient amps (watts?) to power a hairdryer. Four questions for the group: 1, Is it correct that hairdryers can't be used in roomettes? 2. Do the electrical outlets in Superliner bedrooms have...

Why can't we book AmBus without a train?

Another example of being able to travel by bus without any rail component is Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe. This is (I believe) the only bus-only service that Amtrak offers in California, where it is otherwise forbidden.

    Alaska

Maybe Via rail to Prince Rupert, BC, then ferry to Juneau or Haines or Skagway (both near Juneau), then ferry from Juneau or Haines or Skagway to Anchorage or bus from Haines or Skagway to Anchorage.

    Meals TUC-LAX?

In July we'll be traveling from Tucson to Los Angeles on the Texas Eagle/Sunset. With the new schedule, we depart Tuscon at 7:35 pm and arrive Los Angeles at 5:35 am. Will they still be serving dinner when we board in Tucson? If so, should we ask our attendant when we board to make dinner...

    4th of July Fireworks

We'll be on the Coast Starlight (LAX to SEA) this July 4. Should be in Oakland just about 9:45, hope to catch view of some fireworks in Oakland or over the San Francisco Bay!

    Amtrak California Ads

I believe that the Amtrak California ads are sponsored by the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans), not by Amtrak. They also have quite a few billboard and magazine ads. There is also a separate Amtrak Cailfornia website (www.amtrakcalifornia.com), which says that Amtrak...

    First trip on Coast Starlight

Attend an afternoon wine and cheese tasting in the PPC. It's free for sleeping car passengers.

    Sunset limited to coast starlight

I just booked reservations from the Sunset to the CSL and Amtrak confirmed that it's a guaranteed connection.

Questions on CZ (5/6) & DEN

Checked baggage service is absolutely available at Denver. I've never rented a car at the temporary Denver station, but it is right downtown and only a couple blocks from Union Station. I'm sure there are quite a few rental agencies in the area that would pick you up in a van. The Amtrak...

Amtrak's FB ad on Thruway Connections

I took the Thruway Bus from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe. A beautiful drive, and for once I was able to enjoy the spectacular scenery instead of having to keep my eyes on the road. The bus was very comfortable and pleasant.
