WiFi in Pacific Parlor Car on Coast Starlight

Thanks everyone! I think I'll be fine without the Internet for 12 hrs if need be, even though I am pretty addicted to it! ;) Don't know how we used to live without the Internet!

WiFi in Pacific Parlor Car on Coast Starlight

I just learned that there is free WiFi in the Pacific Parlor Car. According to what I've read, it wasn't working so well 6 months ago--people were unable to connect even though it appeared available, for example. Is it working better now? If the WiFi works well, I will be extra glad we...

Detroit > Fallingwater > Washington DC

When you are in Detroit, absolutely do not miss the Detroit Institute of Arts--it is a gorgeous, breath-taking, huge art museum with over $1 Billion dollars worth of art. Actually the art is priceless in my opinion~with many of the masters' art represented. I was blown away when I visited it~it...

    California Zephyr

I've read that the CZ goes through 29 tunnels on its route. One is even 6 miles long. I am wondering if there could ever be a problem with an avalanche occluding a tunnel entrance or exit. I know there's not a lot of snow out there in the mountains right now, but winter isn't over by any...

    New to Train travel

It's about an 8 hour trip, right? Did you book bedrooms or roomettes for the other two legs? For a day trip, a roomette would work well, especially if it is in a low bucket. No question--I would do that. You will love it! :)

Bad experience on Amtrak with sleeper rooms

You're right. We got off during the day. I can see why the SCA would wants the beds ready for the new arrivals. That makes sense! However it would have been helpful if the SCA had told everyone as soon as they came onboard that she would ask passengers to move into empty rooms 30 min prior...

Bad experience on Amtrak with sleeper rooms

When we were in a sleeper car last year, the SCA came to our roomette about 30 minutes before arrival, asked us to keep the seats upright, and to be ready to disembark soon. He also asked for all our trash, to check the floors for any wrappers or trash, and then took all our used/dirty...

Sale on LD trips starting next week.

Two questions: Has Amtrak ever had a sale on sleeper accomodations? And has Amtrak ever had a LD rail fare sale that could still be applied if someone upgraded to a sleeper? I've never seen this before.

    Greetings from Michigan

Hello, and Merry Christmas to you! Sounds like a wonderful trip is planned! We did our first long distance trip (one night) in a roomette and loved it--but now we are upgrading to a bedroom for our cross country trip in the end of January so we can have extra room for our 2 night trip. We...

    Family Room Bucket Prices

I thought maybe it was a low travel time, but wouldn't know why that weekend would be any different than any others. In fact, the regular bedrooms are all out of low bucket prices during those 3 days--at mid level and even high buckets. So, it is still puzzling to me. Could it be a mistake...

    Family Room Bucket Prices

I was looking at Amsnag and have a question about family room prices from CHI to EMY. I checked for a 30 day period (and longer, actually) and all the family rooms were priced at $1186 at low bucket (since both rooms were still available) in mid Jan to mid Feb 2012 on the CZ--EXCEPT for three...

    Combining Reservations After Making Them

I have a train trip reserved on the CZ from CHI to EMY this coming January with its own reservation number, of course. However, I still need to get to CHI--a prior train ride on the Pere Marquette. I have not made that reservation pending the potential weather situation, because I am still...

    California Zephyr in Winter Weather

So, I am riding the California Zephyr from CHI to EMY at the end of this coming January. I am assuming we will go through lots of snow and ice and perhaps bad snowstorms. What has been the CZ's pattern in January-February travel and late arrivals (eg greater than 6 hours) into EMY? Just...

Coast Starlight Service Alert Jan-Feb 2012

OK--that makes sense! I never heard of the Tehachapi loop--I will check it out on Wikipedia, unless you want to elaborate on what that is!

Coast Starlight Service Alert Jan-Feb 2012

So, after changing my reservations (CHI to LAX on the Texas Eagle) last week mainly due to the recently added bus bridge from Longview to Fort Worth, TX in Jan 2012, I am keeping a wary eye on my new reservations. My changed reservations include traveling on the California Zephyr from CHI to...

Texas Eagle Reservation Changes for Jan 2012--Quesions!

I am considering staying at the Summerfield Suites. Looks really convenient to the Amtrak Station and so we won't have to rent a car but can use the BART, I hope. Now we are thinking we will stay an extra day in San Franscisco and spend one less day in LA. We have been to LA before, but not...

Texas Eagle Reservation Changes for Jan 2012--Quesions!

I agree FunNut--this itinerary is an improvement, especially with the Coast Starlight addition. I have never been to Texas, so did want to do that trip in the wintertime on the TE to get away from the cold and snow. But it's not worth it to me when there are scheduled disruptions that could...

Texas Eagle Reservation Changes for Jan 2012--Quesions!

I'm excited about our new plans~thanks for everyone's positive comments about my change! Also glad I checked our reservations this morning--this was prompted by another poster talking about the Texas Eagle bussing issue. Didn't hear a word from Amtrak about the bus bridge--and don't know if I...

Texas Eagle Reservation Changes for Jan 2012--Quesions!

Yes, thanks! We may see a lot of snow, but it is definitely better than bussing, uncertainties, and sack meals. Reservations are all switched! Necessity is the mother of invention! :)

Texas Eagle Reservation Changes for Jan 2012--Quesions!

OK, I decided I'm not dealing with the bus and the questions around whether we will get to eat in the dining car or not. I switched gears completely for our trip. We are now leaving a day earlier. We are taking the California Zephyr to San Francisco. We are staying overnight in SF and taking...
