Why does the Coast Starlight go east of the Cascades?

There was a rail line that followed I-5 between Mt. Shasta and Eugene. However, the line is extremely winding and has steep grades as it goes directly through the mountains. Currently the line is used by a short-haul route. Given its age and the terrain. Any attempts at intercity rail are going...

Amtrak's own hypothetical national track infrastructure discussion

So I take it we're not gonna electrify between DC and Richmond for the time being.

Restore Passenger Service to Southern Montana?

At the very least, Amtrak is looking at reviving train services from Atlanta to Chattanooga to Nashville. At the same time they can tackle a Nashville-Memphis rail line as part of the Atlanta-Nashville line (we can also add a DFW-Little Rock-Memphis intercity train). These two would help link...

Amtrak's own hypothetical national track infrastructure discussion

Seems I fumbled then. I know Tejon has no rails and thus no freight trains, but it is heavy with passenger automobile traffic. This, combined with Tehachapi being extremely heavy in freight traffic, was the reason I brought up building a Tejon rail line if Amtrak California wants to connect the...

Amtrak's own hypothetical national track infrastructure discussion

I think we can get that larger amount of taxpayer money from taxing Wall Street and shifting all the money away from pointless wars to infrastructure and other critical needs

Amtrak's own hypothetical national track infrastructure discussion

The only reason CAHSR went for Tehachapi over Tejon was bias in favor of the Antelope valley and that they deliberately made the Tejon route an inferior choice to make Tehachapi more desirable. Clem did a study debunking these claims and pointed out the many benefits with using Tejon over...

Amtrak's own hypothetical national track infrastructure discussion

In numerous places, Amtrak is going to have to build their own tracks, especially in places that have heavy freight traffic. Case in point, the Cajon and Tejon pases.

Amtrak's own hypothetical national track infrastructure discussion

It seems the only way out is for America to fundamentally change its politics, which is going to be borderline impossible unless a collapse to society, like something akin to the Great Depression hits America (it's not out of the possibility though).

Amtrak's own hypothetical national track infrastructure discussion

Then you wonder why American infrastructure has been decaying and any actual necessary solutions to solve it ends up getting shot down and craven half-measures to appease the NIMBYs that ultimately don't do jack are passed. It seems people like to call out high speed rail as being pharaonic yet...

Amtrak's own hypothetical national track infrastructure discussion

At the very least, 110-125 mph rail on corridor routes, and around 90 mph on non-corridor routes for a start

Does Amtrak Have Wrecked Superliner Sleepers?

I'm talking about a Carquinez (I-80 route) tunnel. Benicia-Martinex (I-680) will just receive a new rail bridge. Passenger trains are barred from using the Tehachapi rail line (save for the occasional Coast Starlight train whenever UP closes the Coast Subdivision for maintenance), which was...

Does Amtrak Have Wrecked Superliner Sleepers?

I think building an underwater tunnel following the Carquinez Bridge would make better sense than trying to rebuild the 1962 Carquinez Bridge so as to accomodate rail. And the rebuilt Sacramento Northern between Pittsburgh and Sacramento would be the new rail line to divert freight from the...

Does Amtrak Have Wrecked Superliner Sleepers?

The Santa Susana alignment was a holdover from Southern Pacific and the reason for its alignment was because it was the easiest way for trains back in the late 19th century/early 20th century to leave the San Fernando Valley west for Ventura County and beyond as following the present day US 101...

Does Amtrak Have Wrecked Superliner Sleepers?

I'd much rather go with a new ROW following US-101 between LAUS and Ventura county. The existing line can be saved for the short-line freights and a Simi Valley commuter line.

Does Amtrak Have Wrecked Superliner Sleepers?

As for who owns what * PCJPB/Caltrain: San Francisco-Tamien * BNSF: LAUS-Fullerton, Bakersfield-Fresno * SCRRA/Metrolink: Fullerton-San Diego County line, LAUS-Moorpark * NCTD/Coaster: San Diego County line-San Diego * UP: everything else Mind sending me a link about this blog post.

Does Amtrak Have Wrecked Superliner Sleepers?

Seems California DOT/Amtrak California should reassume operation of the 3 routes (Capitol Corridor, San Joaquin and Pacific Surfliner) from those 3 agencies it transferred over to. In the meantime, California DOT/Amtrak California can also acquire the tracks between San Diego and Fullerton and...

Does Amtrak Have Wrecked Superliner Sleepers?

I can see the state try to buy the remainder of the Coast Line (San Jose-Moorpark) from Union Pacific, since that line doesn't see much freight traffic anyway. It is gonna require considerable construction for a modernized service though.

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

A little bit off topic but still related to Virgin Trains, has anyone here been keeping tabs on the Victorville-Las Vegas train?

Restore Passenger Service to Southern Montana?

I see. How did the SP&S and NP Pasco-Spokane lines compare, like which towns did they stop at (cant seem to find an exact alignment of the former)
