    Serious Amtrak mishandling of passengers

It's worth considering that this may be a management issue. The train crew probably had instructions that passenger flow from the gate is someone else's duty, and the rule book says to leave at a certain time, and if they leave late the metrics will ding them for running a late train. The boxes...

    East River Tunnels rehabilitation 2024-2027

I don’t think there was another train there, but it was a while ago, I could be wrong. I’m pretty sure we were on track 5, which is the usual track for northbound departures.

    East River Tunnels rehabilitation 2024-2027

Here’s the press release from the Gov: https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-and-amtrak-announce-restoration-empire-service-time-holiday-season?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR21mBXGUKjzaz1Igdmz98C5GrQBZC5xQOJCbobIEiWOMK-2S-Oyjd4BnHE_aem_R7J8HWs20Bf2tClMNcsA9g Kind of funny 245 gets an...

    Empire Builder discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I’m on 7 starting today in Chicago. This printout was waiting for me in my room. I haven’t seen one of these in years … not one provided for me anyway.

    California Zephyr first time rider

On a different subject, can someone tell me if sleepers are still on the front end of the CZ? I’m traveling next week, departing from Richmond, which is a short stop and I’d like to be waiting on the right end. The car is 632.

    New traveler's checked baggage question

Don’t lose your baggage check receipt. Unlike the airlines, Amtrak actually checks these at most destinations.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

With my home station being Albany, this hurts. I now have one option to get to Florida instead of two. And with the Meteor departing Miami at 8:10 a.m., that means getting up at 6 a.m., which is no way to start your final day of vacation. I could take the Silver Star and change at Washington and...

VIA Rail Canadian and the Canadians

I finally got a reply from Via Rail customer service. They apologized and said the agents got it wrong, and they will follow up with the appropriate manager. I guess that's just about the end of it. One other note that's tangentially related to this subject, in case anybody ends up flying due to...

VIA Rail Canadian and the Canadians

That's correct, my original ticket was Vancouver to Toronto, then had hoped to catch the train at its revised start point in Edmonton. I wrote an email to Via Rail customer service several days ago and have yet to hear back. I haven't pursued it any more aggressively because, frankly, it seems a...

VIA Rail Canadian and the Canadians

I suspect this is computer/reservation issue. You were still getting on from the origin of your trip, so it was easy for agents to simply alter your reservation to end at Winnipeg and issue a refund for the remainder. My trip was cancelled from its origin to Edmonton, so the reservation system...

VIA Rail Canadian and the Canadians

Yes, the original fare, Vancouver to Toronto, was $2,094 -- I think I heard the agent say in passing that this was a promotional fare, though I don't remember it listing as such when I booked it. The fare they offered from Edmonton to Toronto was a bit more than that, not a lot more, maybe $100...

VIA Rail Canadian and the Canadians

I ask this question by way of a story ... I flew to Vancouver about two weeks ago for a long-awaited journey on The Canadian, taking the train end-to-end from Vancouver to Toronto. The train was cancelled due to wildfires. Almost half of Jasper (a key stop on that route) burned down. I...

Btw, for whatever it’s worth, the Southbound Adirondack yesterday had 10 cars plus engines.

Fort Edward is not on the Northway, which Greyhound/Trailways use on the run to Plattsburgh and Montreal. Used to be they stopped at a diner in Saratoga Springs, but that diner has been gone for years. I've seen buses stopped at Fastrac off Exit 18 in Glens Falls ... that may be where they stop...

    Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges

Just left NYC going north on 245, which I am so glad to have back. It sure was nice to have lounge access, if only to have a decent bathroom to fall back on. That’s a plus in the city. The lounge did have some decent selections for food. I guess I just didn’t look closely enough last time.

Last time I was there, I only saw bagals and other small stuff. Maybe I was there at the wrong time?

    Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges

Does anybody know if they're still allowing you to bring outside food into the Metropolitain Lounge in New York? I'm so happy to see 245 return, I may go down and back Wednesday just to watch a couple of basketball games I don't care about.

    Empire Service discussion

I just noticed 245 is back up running. When did that happen? That’s great news. I can now stay for a ballgame and ride back the same night. And it’s a good insurance policy if I’m coming back down n the Silvers
