    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

One big error I'm seeing in their analysis is the way they evaluate limited stop or non-stop express service. They are only grading it based on ridership projections. Equipment utilization and revenue are not factored in. This will result in them discounting and likely not launching an...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024

Stuart seems like a logical choice. And the slow single-track bridge is just north of that station location, so the time penalty will be minimal.

We had to make the same movement last year. Hopefully they are finally fixing it.

It looks like WDOT needs to work with BNSF to resolve these stability issues in Kelsey. They did a lot of work in Mukilteo and south of Seattle in the past, but I don't recall this area getting any attention. The PDX-SEA train is only as strong as its weakest link.

AS Flight1282: Another Boeing 737 MAX crisis

No extra legroom with this door plug config. I think we can refer to row 26 as the "unexpected exit row". https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Alaska_Airlines/Alaska_Airlines_Boeing_737-900_D.php

AS Flight1282: Another Boeing 737 MAX crisis

The pilots had just endured a terrifying experience, where the cockpit door was ripped open, their headsets ripped off, and checklists flew out. After safely landing the plane, they forgot to pull the breakers on the CVR. This is a forgivable mistake. As for the seat being empty: there were 7...

I wish they would report the slide location. I know we've had a lot of rain, but it's frustrating that this is still happening after the states have spent so much on mitigation. It would be good to know where they need to focus efforts next.

Twin Cities (Minnesota) Local and Suburban Rail Service discussion

Not ideal, but it's still a better connection than Boston North to Boston South.

Compared to the Talgos, it's the tiny windows, generally clunky/old feel, and lack of tilting on our very curvy corridor makes it less comfortable both for sitting and walking around. Talgos also have a better bistro/dining car area. But yes, the seats on the Horizons are perfectly comfortable.

All About the Portland MAX (and associated Transit)

It's definitely BRT "lite", but it is useful. I live within walking distance of MAX, and the FX2 sped up the trip on Division enough (frequency being a more important factor when transferring) that I now take it to access OMSI and the Tilikum area, instead of taking MAX + streetcar to get...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

I know it would be insanely expensive, but has Brightline looked at a single or double-track passenger train bypass tunnel for Stuart? Turning north by the airport and going underground, under the river, and emerging at the big curve on the north end would permit uninterupted 80+ mph operations...

Superliner trains' removal and restoration of cars (2022-2023)

This is ridiculous. I won't be booking a sleeper trip on Amtrak until this insanity ends.

    Amtrak - Brightline connections?

Once Brightline expands to Tampa, wouldn't it make sense to either terminate services or at least make a stop at the Brightline MCO station? The Amtrak service south of MCO is so horribly slow as it is. I would prefer to transfer at that point and then either head to Tampa or Miami on a...

Schedule is another factor. Brightline is going to be running hourly service. That's an absolute no-brainer decision for me. You have so much more flexibility, especially if your plans change, or there is a service disruption.

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

That diagonal concept looks fantastic. Future long-distance trains should have that for business class, providing a cheaper option below the full Roomette/Bedroom level. I would never personally consider coach for anything over 10 hours, or anything overnight, but I would pay 2-3x more for...

Amtrak Solar Eclipse viewing April 8 2024

The lesson I learned from 2017 is that getting to your location isn't too bad, because people are trickling in over multiple days, but they nearly everyone tries to leave around the same time after the event. The best thing you can do is plan to hang out one more night wherever you might be...

Amtrak Solar Eclipse viewing April 8 2024

We are looking at flying into Dallas and trying for something in that area. Any reason I should be looking at San Antonio over Dallas? The flights are a lot easier/cheaper for Dallas.

Adding frequency to Long Distance (LD) service

That stretch of I-5 is generally uncongested (outside of big winter storms), so it would make sense to improve intercity bus service. That rail line is in very rough shape.

Passenger/Freight Rail Collision in Greece, 2/28

Aside from tankers full of flammables or chemicals, I can't think of a more dangerous thing to have a passenger car crash into. A dense thin mass will just shear straight through the body shell. Absolute nightmare scenario here.

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

We're looking at taking the EB out to Chicago either later this year, or next year, so I'm glad to see a second daily option from the Twin Cities. We would really like to do a stopover at St. Paul, as we have never visited the upper Midwest, but the single daily train had me a bit nervous about...
