Rumors about Amtrak move to the MIC at Miami International Airport (not happening)

The way I see it. The Miami airport station should not have been built unless the design was signed off and approved by Amtrak. At this point what is the cost to upgrade the existing station to make it acceptable to Amtrak? Is it practical and are there alternatives? What about putting in a...

    Northeast Regional discussion H2 2024-2025

Depends on the conductor. I have witnessed people talking loudly frequently as well. Wear eye mask and ear plugs.

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

You You are discouraged that people are reading and posting Amtrak's policy manual? I understand your gripe with having books etc. in a small space. Do you understand the paying customer's gripe with several tables taken up by Amtrak staff in the café car? If the policy is wrong then work...

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

This is interesting, per the manual: https://www.amtrak.com/content/dam/projects/dotcom/english/public/documents/corporate/foia/amtrak-service-standards-manual-101424-redacted.pdf On Northeast Regional trains the cafe car is supposed to be open continually except for right before entering NYP...

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

"As for why is the Cafe "closed for one hour after departing Boston"... I have never been on a train where it isn't opened by RTE. Also keep in mind that the LSA has to stock the cafe." Amtrak policy states this is to be done before departure...

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

You have a far different experience than me. Most trips I have taken the cafe car is not open until Providence RI, many times after that station. I'll give them 1 table. That should be more than enough. Amtrak policy states 1 table unless there is no overhead luggage storage...

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

One step at time. I'll take a café that is open with a tables that you can actually sit at, served by a pleasant willing attendant. I have been on many trains where there is a constant line to the café for hours. Many people just give up and leave. Why not staff it with 2 attendants? Also...

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

I hope they look into improving the cafe car service. Like, why is it closed for an 1 hour or more after departing Boston South Station? Why are 2 or sometimes 3 tables taken up for Amtrak employees? On sold out trains would it make sense to have 2 cafe car attendants to speed up service?

FY 2025 Ridership Expansion and Fiscal Recovery

Are there non-union commuter contracts in the U.S.? I have never heard of one.

FY 2025 Ridership Expansion and Fiscal Recovery

Prior to 2020 (Covid) that was not entirely the case. In fiscal 2019, 9 routes made money. 9 routes came in under 1 million in losses for the year. Another 7 had losses under 3 million. 6 routes had losses over 3 million. It has always been a mixed bag. Interesting about the commuter...

FY 2025 Ridership Expansion and Fiscal Recovery

I can see why one would misunderstand the concept when many state supported lines break even or make money. I think the goal should be for Amtrak to break even on all state supported lines.

FY 2025 Ridership Expansion and Fiscal Recovery

That loss for the Springfield shuttle includes state subsidies. What is also interesting is that Amtrak showed a $16.7 million loss for October overall while the State Supported routes had a loss of $14.9 million. I have stated in the past that all state supported routes should at least...

FY 2025 Ridership Expansion and Fiscal Recovery

Interesting fact about the Autotrain is that this is the first month it ran in the red this year albeit only a $100,000 lost. Also the Downeaster still made money even with the loss in passengers. The Springfield shuttle is also a big money loser, $1.9 million loss for the month of October.

    Northeast Regional discussion H2 2024-2025

Amtrak is not turning their trains on the Northeast Corridor to save time. So half the seats face backwards and have face forwards on all cars including business class. https://media.amtrak.com/2024/02/fixed-forward-and-backward-seating/ Thus the business class car can be either the front or...

Ideas for reducing NEC trip times

I remember back in the early days of Amtrak (1974-79) when most of the employees were ex-NYPenn on the Northeast corridor. The conductors back then had no problem hustling people on and off the train in a timely matter. Some would say they were rude.

Ideas for reducing NEC trip times

I would also like to point out the seats on Amtrak NER and Acela are roomier and more comfortable than the Frecciarossa high speed train. There is more leg room as well and the bathrooms are also much larger on Acela and Amfleet coaches. I prefer the Amfleet café car to Frecciarossa café which...

Ideas for reducing NEC trip times

I just got back from Italy and rode their HSP rail. All stations in Italy had low platforms. It didn't take more than a couple of minutes for passengers de-board and board with the exception of major stations.

    East River Tunnels rehabilitation 2024-2027

What would be the extra costs? Track fees at Grand Central? I think it is still a better alternative than no train.
