New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Amtrak has excess Viewliners that it doesn't have assigned and has stored. - 36 Viewliner Sleepers are unassigned to single level LD overnight consists (48% not assigned) - 15 Viewliner Diners are unassigned to single level LD overnight consists (42% not assigned) - 4 Viewliner Bagg-Dorms are...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I would surely hope that passengers would be allowed to stay onboard and it's a through train from Miami to Chicago via Washington DC. This would be most efficient. Unloading and then re-loading passengers at Washington DC between Star and Capitol is just a lot of work for train crews and red...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

Revenues only grow with good ridership and increased capacity - Graham Claytor's motto. Amtrak continues with a constrained capacity with its LD trains - coach and sleeper class. The trains that haven't recovered as much (e.g. Capitol Limited, Cardinal, etc.) are at the bottom of the barrel with...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

Gardner makes for a great politician..... Guess Amtrak continues to be his stepping stone.... Some of his points make sense, others are completely false, and some just don't even add up. I don't want to get off topic though. I do like a LOT of the elements in the new LD Fleet designs. It's too...

And the Viewliner Baggage Cars get rendered useless for the bi-level LD train sets that are being proposed I presume? Forget the baggage space in the Utility car - use the Viewliner Baggage Car and create more revenue sleeper or crew space etc. There's 70 some new Viewliner Baggage Cars, let...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

It's in the documents. I agree that it appears that the "club bedroom" would be the "closest" replacement to the current Superliner bedroom option. The lower level option as a "double bed" is nice. There's only 8 Club Bedrooms in the minimum consist design, when presently Amtrak has 10 if having...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

Yes! I remember them! These internal shades really kept the light out and were awesome!!! When they worked that is - at the beginning of the Viewliner Sleeper's life in the late 1990s and early 2000's. They got replaced with regular curtains, that never did the internal shades justice. They were...

There is sleeper space on the lower level of the lounge car, as well as the cafe car! Until there's full renderings of the cars released, hard to say what's what with "common showers" and "common bathrooms." Only seeing specs for the common shower in the Utility Car, separate crew shower is listed.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

For the "Standard 10 Car Consist" that's proposed, here's what I get for sleeper space: 3 - Premium Bedrooms (good for two people) 20 - Roomettes (good for two people) 8 - Club Rooms (good for four people) 32 - Solo Suites (good for one person, but the "divider" can be opened up) 4 - Accessible...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

Two questions: 1) So do the coach seats - in this current copy of specifications - look like they are in line with what the current Superliner Coaches are offering, +/- a few degrees if regular coach or premium coach, or does it appear they will be drastically different? My opinion - they need...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

To answer to a previous post, the report read in one section that they are expecting the short distance passengers to be in the 2x2 seating and the premium seat passengers (2x1 section) to be the "long haul" coach passengers.

There's even specification that the elevators need to be operated "manually" with some sort of override system in the case of a "power failure." Not sure how that will exactly work. Rocky Mountaineer's bi-level Gold Leaf service has elevators in them I believe.

Adirondack June '23 cancellation, and September restoration, state of Upstate NY service

Considering all, it would seem that a more immediate solution may to be offload passengers at Plattsburgh and bus them to Montreal - faster than 10 mph and slow orders on the rail. Second that may be to bring the Adirondack onto CP rail and the EXO station in Montreal. All still needs...

Coast Starlight or Sunset Limited for our next trip?

Coast Starlight - but take it northbound for the greatest extent of both daylight running along the Pacific Coast and through the Cascade Mountains. Love the section along the Pacific Coast and into the farmlands of Paso Robles. Then wake up to Klamath Falls and into the Cascades!

    Empire Builder discussion

How did Amtrak handle the passengers in Shelby, for the train cancelled - your original train? Did they overnight folks in Shelby? Did the train set hold in Shelby? Is your original train consist tacked on to todays’s eastbound consist? Curious as to how Amtrak handled this, as the Empire...

    Viewliners or Superliners

Last week Lake Shore Limited had VLII or Boston sleeper and two VL1’s for NYC section. I believe that has been the standard for a bit, as mentioned in a previous post. The 12 car had been a Viewliner II Sleeper, but that has since changed.

    Texas Eagle discussion

The ”Meridian Speedway” and this re-route via El Paso was on Warrington’s Network Growth Strategy Plan back in the 1990s.…..Both still being talked about so they must be way down there on the priority list……lol.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

It’s actually quite a complicated and intertwined service - Amtrak’s food preparation, sourcing, logistics, and even staffing. The staff handing or putting the food at at the Metro Lounges (NY and even Chicago) may have Amtrak uniforms on, but they are not paid directly by Amtrak - they are...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

i think the Acela First Class experience - especially the food selections - have gone deeply downhill. It’s not what it used to be. The VIA 1 class of service (business class) and even Metroliner First Class was/is better. More to be desired at present. Amtrak is trying to sell high priced...
