Bi-level Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H2 2024

If that's the case, the crew would probably save all the dome space for themselves.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Sue, assuming all purchase costs equal. However, what if you can purchase three single level cars for the price of two bilevels we don't know this info. Anything north of NYC often had you switching at WAS instead of NYP anyway.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H2

No thanks. I'll take flex over that.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

I can comment on the current flex meal situation as I just returned from a cross country trip in which I traveled both the Lake Shore and the Crescent. Both had diners with table cloths and flowers. The Lake Shore attendant plated the meals and the salads and also heated up the brownie. Would I...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

And from reports I've been seeing they're still serving the flex meals out of a box and wrapped or still in the original container and placed on top of an Amtrak plate. Come on Amtrak.

The great discussion of seat orientation in trains and planes

There are zero reasons to have backward facing seats in an aircraft. It's not like they can fly backwards for operational efficiency.

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

The bi level cars cost a lot more so I'm not sure on the "efficiency" aspect. The diners are rarely ever full anymore under Amtraks methods of operating them so I don't understand the inadequate capacity comment on the Viewliner diners. We did just fine with single level diners for decades. I...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

I don't understand the obsession with running bilevel cars in the East. The Viewliner sleepers are fine, the Viewliner diners are too. So you're talking mostly about coaches, which probably will be easily modified versions of the new NEC coaches. And it shouldn't be too hard to come with a new...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Hopefully they let you "lounge" in the lounge and not reserve it for the benefit of the crew.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I'm on the Crescent from NOL to NYP on June 28. So having a diner is at least a lot better than eating my flex meals out of a bag in my roomette. And the presentation sounds like a nice improvement. Actually, if they would just serve a decent pre dinner salad with the plated flex meal it...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

The solo suites seem like a lot more than a "first class coach". Each one is a separate room with a full door and a sink. Yes, there's a divider between the two adjoining rooms that can be opened (only if both occupants agree and unlock), but otherwise it's a full solo room with a bed and a...

Preferred connection time between Long Distance (LD) trains

I love a four hour or so connection in Chicago. I always go out and walk around, usually down to Grant Park and the Navy Pier, grab some lunch and get back to Union Station about an hour or so before scheduled departure out west. Nice way to break up the transcontinental trip from NY. I've done...

    Amtrak changed my accommodation

I booked about a week ago for June 18 Chi-Lax on the Chief. I got the same room you mentioned , room 6 car 330.

I fail to see how that is "asking for problems". Not every car is exactly the same.

    Acela discussion

That's the only short stretch on the New haven line in in Metro North territory where the commuter trains hit that speed.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Amtrak has a habit of basically just scrapping older equipment any time they get new equipment. I agree they should rehab the best of the Superliners and use them to augment the new cars for expanded service. Maybe use rehabbed Superliners on the shorter one night runs such as the Capital...

It's an Amfllet 1 with half the seats facing forward and the other half facing backwards.

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

Doesn't bother me at all. I often sit backwards in a roomette if the sun is really in my eyes sitting forward. I don't understand why it's such an issue for many. But I also commuted into NYC for years and the commuter trains are set up with half the seats facing backwards so you get used to it...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I love the Amfleets. Very relaxing feel inside. The lighting is great, they ride OK, still look nice. They've held up really well considering their age and usage. But it is time for replacement.

    Empire Builder discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

They do that fairly often from Portland to Spokane if they're running late. Happened to me. I wrote a letter and was given a voucher large enough to take a roomette NYP to Miami so I was happy how they handled it.
