St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago Corridor service H2 2024

Wow. you're writing off one of Amtrak's most successful routes just because it doesn't stop every five minutes.

    Michigan North-South Rail Passenger Project

Running a train across the endless forests of the lower pennisula at the expense of a Grand Rapids-Lansing-Detroit route doesn't make much sense. Running any kind of train across the population light U.P. makes even less.

Height clearances at Chicago Union Station

    Interesting maybe, but not practical.

    Pets on Long Distance Trains

Genuine service animals are permitted everywhere.

Is Chicago transit ready for the DNC?

I imagine that most of the delegates will be transported from their hotels to the United Center by private charter buses. The delegates who will traveling around town on their own probably won't break the system, although it has taken the CTA a long time to recover from the COVID crisis. Of...

You seem to have the weirdest contacts with other people

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024

I agree. People can't stop watching an accident site. I doubt if rolling past a train-car crash would traumatize most people.

New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

The Sunset East will never be revived. There were way too many operational problems. As far as switching out a short-distance train for a long distance train, I doubt if they will ever happen anywhere on the Amtrak system. To succeed, short distance trains need to operate on a dependable...

    Chicago Union Station discussion

Ogilvie has a small waiting room on the train gate level. It's OK, but nothing great. waiting in the food court one level below the track level would be better. Or you could wait around at Union Station great hall.

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

I'd say Kansas City Southern. They were still buying new coaches into the early 60's.

Do you think a congressman personally answers every constituent's letter?

Nervous first-timer boarding in the middle of the night

The poster will be boarding the Sunset Limited (with Texas Eagle through cars), so it will not be a short train. But if this is a scheduled stop with the rider's name on the manifest, the train will stop. A conductor or attendant will open a door.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Replacement of Superliner equipment on the Cap has been talked about for years here on AU. So far, no change.

Can Private Railroads operate passenger service without government help?

UP has offered some public rides on Big Boy runs in the past few years, but the prices have been astronomical.

Can Private Railroads operate passenger service without government help?

Union Pacific has absolutely no interest in running passenger trains. Right now, they're in the process of turning over their Chicago commuter trains entirely over to Metra. Unlike BNSF, they have no other contracts to run commuter trains anywhere, they sure wouldn't want to get back into the...

    Trapped on train at CUS?

There are a lot of holes in this story. Obviously she got off the train, so somebody (Amtrak police, yard workers) must have found her after the call (from her? from her mother?). The train was not properly searched after arrival. She was on the CONO, so it was daylight by the time it got to...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I think the nine-car concept will be a "core' train with the ability to add coaches and sleepers on head and rear ends.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

All kinds of agencies have looked at those Santa Fe hi-levels for years, and nobody is interested.

Metra is also operating holiday trains.

    Midwest Venture discussion 2023 Q3 -2024

There are no Vemture cafe cars in service yet on any Midwestern route., so the old cafe/business cars are still running.
