    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

The lowest roomette fares on the Eagle from LA to Chicago are the fourth bucket at $989. Last week I checked every date for the next eleven months. It’s easier when there are only three and not seven days a week to check. Last year around this time the low bucket $623 was available on many...

$424 for a nine hour trip and during the day. That’s the lowest price?.. and incredibly, someone will actually pay that.

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Out of curiosity, I checked the Western routes leaving Chicago on a mid November day. I did find a $588 fare one person senior roomette for the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland and $714 from Bloomington Il to LA on the Eagle. $12 Coach from Chicago to Bloomington. Otherwise $960 leaving...

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

At 75,riding Coach is tough, but doable. I am on a rail pass now riding from Boston to San Luis Obispo. Last month using the pass I rode from New York to Chicago, then Chicago to New Orleans on the CONO and back to NY on the Crrscent My own rule of thumb is that I will not pay more than $350 for...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Of course there is a better way,but Amtrak doesn’t do anything. A better grade of frozen dinners, letting people eat from the cafe car, which is an improvement, or heaven forbid, bring back traditional dining. It’s been six years since flex. Why is it taking so long to return to traditional...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

To me $2000 and more for a bedroom from Chicago to Seattle,Portland,Emeryville or LA is insane. Yet people pay what Amtrak wants and that’s the bottom line. It’s basically a 48 hour or less trip . We paid $2100 earlier this year for a 12 day transatlantic cruise for two with superior food larger...

I’m on a rail pass. All Coach. The burger, hot dog and the two sandwiches available from the cafe car are better than the flex offerings.

    USA Rail Pass questions

Of course you know the pass is all Coach and you can’t bid up. Will you be staying at a hotel between segments? The Texas Eagle from LA to Chicago is three nights. That’s a lot of time to be in Coach. Also on the San Antonio to Chicago leg there is no Sightseer car and you are pretty much...

    Cardinal discussion

I took the Cardinal when it was a Superliner with a Sightseer Car. If any train needs a Sightseer it’s the Cardinal. Of course being a viewliner, it’s not possible, Starting and ending in Washington would be ideal. Superliner equipment and a Sightseer car could return. It won’t happen, but...

    Texas Eagle discussion

Until less than a year ago you could find many low bucket fares of $623 on the Eagle from Chicago to LA and vice versa. Lowest I can find is $989, one of the upper buckets and being it is a three day a week train I checked every day for the next 11 months. Without a sightseer and the continued...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

The flex food started on The Crescent in October 2019, predating Covid. The Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited switched to flex in June 2018. All the other Eastern trains switched to Flex the same day as The Crescent.

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I’ve seen Family rooms lower than roomettes. I’ve always been tempted to book one, but I feel I’ll be taking up space to a family who could use it. Only one to a car. Best part is that you can see out of both sides of the train.

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I am retired and living off Social and other investments. Amtrak is catering to the well off. To me, paying $3000 or even $2000 plus in a bedroom from Chicago to Seattle,Portland,Emeryville or LA is insane. Basically a 48 hour trip with good, not great food. I used to do circle trips around the...

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Sleeper prices are insane. Roomettes and bedrooms. Another example Chicago to LA on the Texas Eagle. Used to find low bucket $600 roomette fares on many trips. Now the cheapest I can find is $960. Will not pay it. Others will.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

No bid ups on the rail pass. If I bought Coach for some segments outside of the pass I could bid up. I’m on my second segment NY to Chicago on the Lake Sure. Always fun to see them connect the Boston section in Albany. Tomorrow a roomette on the City of New Orleans. A reasonable price of $350...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

No. I’m on a rail pass between New Orleans and Washington. I was hoping to break it up overnight in a sleeper and the two stops that work were Birmingham and Greensboro. At close to $500 extra for a bed and flex food,I gave it a pass. At $200 to $250 I probably would have done it and broken up...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

That’s the crux of it. The Crescent charges quite a bit for their sleepers. To be served flex is an insult. Good cooked to order food(traditional dining) is part of the Amtrak experience.!Not reheated TV dinners. I just began a rail pass. First part is NY to Chicago on the LSL. I did book a...

It still is flex. Only difference is now it is served in the dining car.

You are probably referring to the “zone” era. It was discontinued in 2016. Last time I booked it was 20,000 points for two zones. I got a roomette from El Paso to Fort Lauderdale. Those were the days, indeed.

Over $2000 for a one night trip. Yet, people will pay it.
