I used my rewards points for the coast starlight from LAX to SEA in coach-so that disqualifies me for an option to BID up.

If I am booking a trip that offers more than one train and includes certain thruway - why is the 10% discount excluded on that thruway portion? and how do I find out which certain? Not valid for travel on certain Amtrak Thruway connecting services.
