    Sunset Limited discussion

@George Harris Here is a link to a SP timetable from 1941. It shows the routing your mother-law probably would have taken. https://streamlinermemories.info/SP/SP41-12TT.pdf

    Fire at Ivy City Facility

I saw this report in Trains Newswire. It appears engine engulfed in flames was the Phase 1 heritage unit. Glad to hear no injuries occurred as a result of the fire. https://www.trains.com/trn/news-reviews/news-wire/fire-damages-amtrak-equipment-at-washington-yard/

Ideas for future trains between Florida and Midwest

.I have several Official Guides from the early to mid 1950s. While the southbound schedules stayed pretty consistent, the northbound trains fluctuated a bit more. For example, in the summer of 1952 the South Wind and Dixie Flagler departed Miami at 12:01 PM while the City of Miami left at 5:40...

    Colorado planning

Actually, while partner N&W pulled out of the City of Louis operation in June of 1968, thereby cutting off thru-service to St. Louis, UP continued service between Kansas City and Denver with the City of Kansas City in this manner all the way to April 30, 1971.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I have attached a couple of screenshots from a 1964 Southern Railway timetable that show the condensed schedules for the Ponce de Leon and Royal Palm on the route between Cincinnati, OH and Jacksonville, FL.

    Empire Builder discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Looking at data from railrat.net, the Empire Builder was rerouted onto the ex Great Northern via Willmar, MN. Incidentally, this was the route of the pre-Amtrak Empire Builder. Today’s routing uses the ex-Northern Pacific between Minneapolis and Fargo. https://railrat.net/trains/8/

The track circuit triggering issue (CN, Amtrak)

I saw this article on Trains Newswire about the Loss of Shunt issue. Not the most encouraging story. https://www.trains.com/trn/news-reviews/news-wire/rail-labor-opposes-amtrak-request-for-waiver-to-deal-with-loss-of-shunt-until-testing-data-is-shared/

    A little bit of nostalgia...

While browsing around on YouTube this afternoon, I found some videos of the Lake Shore Limited, Capitol Limited, and Texas Eagle filmed in the 2010s. No tiny consists here!!! I took some of my first Amtrak trips around this time on these trains, so they'll always have a special place in my...

Chicago-Quincy-Hannibal- St Louis Possible Amtrak Service

CB&Q Timetable from 1956 shows trains running between Hannibal and Quincy taking 20-23 minutes. Note the Quincy stop at that time was located across the Mississippi in West Quincy, MO. The journey today would require additional mileage to reach the current Quincy station in Illinois.

Interesting facts and notes in old railroad magazines

Not interesting at all, really. The 20th Century, especially once streamlined in 1938 operated and advertised itself as an all private-room affair. Sections were, of course, operated on lesser trains.

Gateway Project/New York Penn Station capacity improvement

New Jersey’s New $2.1 Billion Bridge Leaves a Sludge Barge Stranded Came across this story today.

    Long daytime versus overnight?

While perusing some of my old Official Guides, I came across this NYC Timetable from January, 1957. Train #73, The Westerner ran on a daylight schedule between Albany, NY and Chicago, IL. It must have been a test by the New York Central, as I see no mention of it again in my other 1950s Offical...

Eric and Pat's 2023 San Diego-Toledo-San Diego Trip Report

Actually, four of the stations could have been hit on a reasonably simple itinerary, way back in the golden days. Take a NB SAL train from Richmond Main Street Station to Washington D.C. Transfer to B & O #1 the National Limited to St. Louis, which will pass through Point of Rocks and...
