    Hiawatha discussion

Late to the party here. Also a MSP resident and I certainly prefer the mid to late morning time slot. Gives me a reason to enjoy Chicago before getting on LD trains the next day. But then again I am a night owl and would never make a 6 a.m. train. Getting to work before 9 a.m. is an issue for...

Why Do You Tip on Amtrak? [Poll]

Since we hadn't been on Amtrak since 2019, we forgot the tipping in the diner part. We were on California Zephyr going west and the service got progressively worse. Service was superb at the first meal, passable at the last meal. No one we sat with tipped either. By the last meal, we realized...

    Intercity Bus Timetables

I miss the printed timetables and the booklet that Amtrak used to publish of all the routes. The one regret I have was tossing out the one from our 2001 trip. Figured they would always be there. Alas..... ☹️

The Race to save the Surfliner Route from the Pacific.

Rats, I swore I did the gift link. The WSJ link sent me to a pay wall.

    Texas Eagle Discussion 2025

I will second the National Museum of Transportation - worth a whole day. Next to the Botanical Gardens is the Missouri History Museum. They had a great exhibit on Route 66 when we visited some years ago. Don't miss Imo's Pizza!

    End to Northstar?

Before the legislators get too excited over the cost-savings, they need to figure out the exit costs to the existing service. The estimated savings may not be the $10 million they are expecting. The whole Twin Cities transit system has struggled since the pandemic with many routes/stops never...

Orlando is preparing for flying cars

And now we have the runway incursion at Chicago Midway that could have been deadly. We have enough issues with planes, flying cars are folly.

Orlando is preparing for flying cars

After the DCA accident, this should be the last thing that people should be contemplating. Flying cars in the path of arriving and departing aircraft - what could go wrong?

2 year old in roomette tips & advice

We did the family bedroom with our very rambunctious son when he was just a bit older than the kid in OP's question. Gave him plenty of room to run in the room without us worrying about him. Now almost 30, he dreams of taking another train trip as he remembers it being fun from the couple times...

Delta plane flipped over on landing in Canada

Well this is a new one for commercial aviation. Somehow Delta flight 4918 flipped over while landing in Toronto. Reports are 8 people injured, with 3 critical. Around 80 on board the flight. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-pearson-overturned-airplane-1.7461227

I think that is a great idea. Remember what our kid was like at 2 and there would be no way I would have put him on the top.

Taking Amtrak to Annual Festivals and Fairs

Thought it would be helpful for future Amtrak trip planning to compile a list of annual festivals and fairs that are close to Amtrak stops. Here's some to start off the discussion: Empire Builder/Borealis: - St. Paul Winter Carnival (St. Paul) - late January - https://wintercarnival.com/ -...

[Opinion] Why Amtrak Isn't A Good Train Network (And Why It Never Will Be)

Especially given that the rail condition outside of NEC is out of Amtrak's hands.

    Ticket Question

We've taken the cancellation penalty twice and let our vouchers expire during covid. We prefer to think of those lost funds as a donation to keep Amtrak running. 😉

    Another vintage PDX>SEA trip

Thanks Willbridge for your history/vintage posts. I really enjoy reading them and have been intrigued to read more about the areas and eras that you describe. Especially love the pictures! Bravo!

    Hello from NW Indiana

Welcome aboard! Hiccups are part of the fun of Amtrak :) though I completely understand the desire to minimize them.

    Purchase or rent private car

Now a caboose would be cool to have as a secondary living unit in my backyard. Sigh - it would be tough to get it moved in given the topography of our lot and I'm not sure about zoning laws either. And then I remembered that we live in an area subject to tornadoes so guess it isn't the best...
