    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

You are correct - it was the second level doors on the Superliners between the Transdorm through the Dining Car. My error. Still seemed to us to be a safety issue in the event of a fire that could quickly spread between cars with the doors being open. (That's what we get for living next to a...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

Little late in posting this but one thing that concerned me about the run that we had from LAX - CHI was the fact that the train ran with the vestibule doors open coming out of LAX (on 12/8) until sometime after 10 or 11 p.m. that night. It seemed to us to be a safety issue that we could had a...

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

Thank you for writing this, I completely agree with what you wrote as that was going to be part of my response in this thread. Punctuality, reliability, frequency and I would throw in an additional affordability. Thinking back on our recent trip, I'm going to focus on the SWC leg. We actually...

City of New Orleans (train) discussion

Would have been nice to have access to this information while on the train. I can see that we definitely blew through the fat RDA - food tasted great but it didn't sit well with me later. Good thing I had my cholesterol checked before the trip and not after :)!

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

I was heartened to share four meals with younger riders, all of which had never taken Amtrak before. That's what Amtrak needs to survive long-term. Will probably ruffle a few feathers here but I wasn't too worried about how the spokesman was dressed. Then again, I was thrilled to leave a...

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

To clarify, we are knocking the Chief off our list due to the spouse's lack of enjoyment of the scenery as well as the fact that neither of us could stand the rougher track and the impact that it was having on old back injuries. The dining car service on our trip was superb. Although less than...

    Planes overhead

Back in 2018, we stayed at the Drury Inn that was near the Phoenix airport. Had a room with a balcony that had a view of the planes coming in to land. Used FlightAware to monitor the arrivals as we enjoyed watching the British Airways 747 float in as it landed. Very relaxing.

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

In the hopes that someone in Amtrak management actually reads this, here's my recent experience with Amtrak: Borealis (MSP - CHI) - on-time, decent ride, cafe offerings good with personable cafe car attendant. Will repeat this ride in the future. Chicago Metropolitan Lounge - fairly well...

Is Amtrak normally this busy in mid-December?

Depends on the route. Southwest Chief was pretty sparse earlier this week. Empire Builder as well mid-week.

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

We were on 4(8) that was put on the siding for an hour, waiting for 3 to pass. There were no freight trains that passed before it and we saw no freights at all. Given how bad the rail ride was in that area, I thought we would rock right off the track. Guessing that the freight carriers don't...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago Corridor service H2 2024 - 2025

We are getting ready to take the Borealis to Chicago to meet up with a LD train - has anyone had any issues with bringing carry-on luggage (which meet the Amtrak standards) on the train? I am getting stressed out enough with the potential weather issues on the routes we are taking and want to...

There is no good way to travel in America

We took the night buses in Kenya when traveling to or from Nairobi. At the time (early '90's), most people relied on public transport. Some buses were great, some less so. Forget buildings that one could wait in, we just all gathered at the outdoor staging area. Buses were actually much more...

    Hi from the Midwest

New member here, found this forum early in the pandemic right about the time I had to cancel our trip on CONO. We are hoping to go on California Zephyr in 2024. Empire Builder is our home line - have ridden it three times. Have also taken trips on Capitol Limited. We are looking forward to...

Cartogram of Amtrak Ridership by State, 2022

The one thing I notice is that the states with more than just a single square also have more than 2 trains per day providing service. Kind of hard for the states with just a single route, such as the Empire Builder, to get large passenger volumes when the space may already be occupied by other...
