Philly > SF via Cardinal, Southwest Chief, and California Zephyr

WOW - thank you NAVYBLUE! I do indeed feel "it" in my belly, and am trying to carve the space and time out in my life to really do it. Like you, i have a project in the works, but I struggle with finding the time and discipline to work on it consistently. Your words are the perfect nudge of...

Alright guys, one last question. I see how some of you recommend upgrading to business class. I'm familiar with the coach cars on the Cardinal, SWC, and CZ. Are the coach cars (and seats) the same as on those LD routes, or are they smaller? I found coach to be quite comfortable, especially...

Thanks so much, transit 54. Will definitely call Green Cab, and may very well PM you as we get closer to our travel dates to get your recommendations.

Philly > SF via Cardinal, Southwest Chief, and California Zephyr

Thanks for the feedback and kind words, everyone. Means a lot! It's so great to know that our story resonates with others, and that we can all relate, on some level, to train culture and the beauty of slow travel. Hope to see you guys on the rails someday. ~Jen

I thought about taking the ferry to Port Kent and taking the Adirondack home, but unfortunately the ferry is closed during the winter months, as is the Port Kent station. Thanks for your tips, I'll look into whether the connecting bus is still available.

After taking my first LD train trip this past September with a girlfriend (philly > san francisco via the cardinal, southwest chief, and california zephyr), I'm taking my husband on his first train trip from Philly to Vermont in February. While not nearly as long, I'm hoping that it will be...

Philly > SF via Cardinal, Southwest Chief, and California Zephyr

Thanks, Shanghai. I just booked a trip on the Vermonter for my husband and I. We're gonna take it up to Burlington for a long weekend in February. Time to get him hooked on train travel, too.

Thanks so much for your kind words. So glad you enjoyed the report, and that it brought you back to your own adventures. Train folks are indeed good people. Maybe someday our paths will cross on the rails. Thanks again for reading! :D

Thanks, Ryan! Next time you pass through Raton, stop at Hamburger Heaven and take a swing in the hammock.

Hey guys, I finally posted our trip report. Link to it here: http://discuss.amtraktrains.com/index.php?/topic/45280-philly-sf-via-cardinal-southwest-chief-and-california-zephyr/ Raton turned out to be a great time!

Philly > SF via Cardinal, Southwest Chief, and California Zephyr

My best friend Sara and I decided to take a cross country (coach) train trip from Philadelphia to San Francisco to visit our other best friend. We had planned on taking the Cardinal from Philly to Chicago, and then taking the California Zephyr (CZ) from Chicago all the way out to the Bay Area...

6 hours in Raton, NM. What to do?

Sounds like an experience. Glad you finally found food and a beer! I wish we could go to the museum, but we'll be there next Sunday, 9/18, and according to their website, they'll be closed. If we can't find anything fun, we'll make our own fun.

I'm actually flying back east but my friend is taking the train. I'll pass along the info to her. Thanks!

6 hours in Raton, NM. What to do?

"Nothing to do" is a state of mind. Put me in the middle of nowhere with my best friend and good times are bound to occur. Especially if there's a bar. I spend my whole life trying to get from point A to point B; it will be a treat to be somewhere just for the sake of being there. To each...

6 hours in Raton, NM. What to do?

Thanks for your comments, all. We're doing this route because the CZ is suspended CHI > DEN, but we really wanted the DEN > EMR ride, so we decided to go to Raton and bus it up to DEN to catch the CZ westbound. Despite it's podunk feel, we're pretty excited to explore Raton. We both live in...

Hi everyone, First time poster here, and first time rider, too. My friend and I are about to embark on a fantastic adventure from Philadelphia to San Francisco via the Cardinal, SWC, and CZ. We'll be getting off the SWC in Raton, NM and catching a bus to Denver about six hours later. So, for...
