New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Thanks, Penny! See the above info. According to that, apparently a "limited number" will be. Not sure how that works as it's been a few years since I've traveled on Amtrak. Having traveled between ATL or Anniston and New Orleans many times years ago, which is a full day trip in both...

    What should Amtrak change?

I've only read this page but I'll add my on-going complaint. Bring back full service dining cars for all passengers on the long distance trains!

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

It's a shame what they've done to dining service on the Crescent and some other LD trains. It's almost like they want them to fail.

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I totally agree. The end of full dining car service was a huge cut and a mistake, imo, and one that affected my desire for long distance train travel both in coach and in sleepers. Not to mention buying all those new dining cars and then not fully using their expensive kitchens. We've...

AS Flight1282: Another Boeing 737 MAX crisis

This video by a respected pilot has a lot of details about factors contributing to this accident.

    What should Amtrak change?

I'm happy for the western long distance trains, but what do the eastern LD trains have to do to get on Amtrak management's "good list"?? Why are they treated as Amtrak's red-headed step-child? It makes me sick to read how my beloved Crescent has declined. 😢 And once again (beating a dead...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Yes, I would hope coach pax can also eat in the full service dining cars as in the past. There are long day trip segments on the LD trains that don't require sleeping accommodations but do require meals. Fully bring back the dining cars, please! I've always enjoyed meals in the dining cars...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Beating a dead horse, but the full dining cars were an important part of the Amtrak experience for me, as well as for everyone with whom I've traveled. I also think it was silly to buy them and then discontinue their use.

Trip to UK and Ireland Aug/Sept 2022

I very much enjoyed your trip reports! I've made two short visits to London and one to Wales. I'd still love to see Ireland as some of my ancestors were from Ireland. The highlights in London were the Tower and Crown Jewels, some activities at Buckingham, and a visit to Selfridges. We did...

    Southwest Chief derailment (June 2022)

Less than 15 seconds warning time doesn't seem to me to be enough to be safe, especially if the crossing is an especially difficult one for any number of possible reasons (sharp diagonal to the tracks, obstructed view farther down the track, steep incline, gravel surface, etc.). It doesn't...

    Southwest Chief derailment (June 2022)

Thanks for this info. I knew the road crossed at a sharp diagonal to the tracks. With brush obstructing the view farther down from the crossing, it might be difficult to see an approaching train. If there are no nearby crossings there may be no distant train horns to hear. I don't know how...

Picturesque small town stops on Amtrak routes

Laurel, MS. It's the setting of the HGTV renovation series "Home Town." I've been through Laurel many times on the Crescent. I'd like to go there and walk around the town a bit. We did spend a couple of nights in Meridian one time. Charlottesville, VA, is also fun to walk around.

Hub for Amtrak in Atlanta proposed

I've lived in Georgia (thankfully not Atlanta) all my life and love it, but I'll have to see this to believe it. We caught the Crescent in Atlanta a few times years ago but then started going to Anniston instead; much better for us although farther away in miles. I don't go to Atlanta for...

More bridge fire incidents affecting Amtrak

I agree 100%. If you possibly can, get some of that very scenic CZ ride. West of Denver is awesome!

Need advice for short Empire Builder/Glacier National Park trip

Great suggestions, R! I think that may be a better plan. I also greatly appreciate the added info on the hotels. We were trying to hold our trip to four nights but that may not work out. Also, we'd have to have an advance reservation for our Red Bus tour, and we'd also get our train...

Need advice for short Empire Builder/Glacier National Park trip

Thanks, R. Yes, if the eastbound was extremely late, we just wouldn't be able to take it, I suppose. That would eliminate one of the two main reasons for the trip, though! Still pondering all these things and hoping to make it all work. A million thanks, all!

H Rooms available to passengers with no disability?

My late husband and I traveled on the Crescent in the H room quite a few times. He had a transport chair (small wheelchair) but could stand for short periods of time. He never had any problem with the VL 1 H room and toilet, but I realize his disability wasn't as severe as many. The H room in...

Need advice for short Empire Builder/Glacier National Park trip

Again, many thanks, everyone. In looking at the once-a-week shuttle, I had noticed the end points were medical facilities and figured it was a service meant mainly for patients. I had therefore mostly ruled it out for us, even if the timing and stops would have worked. Thanks for confirming...

Need advice for short Empire Builder/Glacier National Park trip

Thanks so very, very much, everyone! I know having a car would simplify so much, but neither of us is willing to be the driver. My friend is usually the one willing to drive, but she's already said she will not drive on this trip, and neither will I. We both want to be able to look at the...
