That's the thing. You don't have that many crews qualified to GCT and some of the remaining people are on different routes., where other people also my have lost their qualification. You'd need Metro-North pilots until you can familiarize the Amtrak crews with the territory.

Who says it "works?" Does it "work" or do is it merely "accepted?" What are the regulations involved that may be an issue over here? In either event case, just because some other country or state does something one way, doesn't necessarily mean it is the best option or route for another area...

I like most of West Point's post, but one thing pops into mind when I think about the NEC ridership numbers: The low, late night/early morning fares. It has really made a difference in ridership. In some areas, an Amtrak may cost less than a commuter train between the same points.

It applied to empty and loaded. The 1400 and 1500 series were slapped with 60mph speed restrictions by most of the host railroads. Most of them are gone, but the ones that remain are relegated to MOW trains, and have are limited to 45mph. Bringing them out of mothball wouldn't help anything...
