It was a historic day on the 1st of January, for Indian Railways. On this day, Kalka Mail completed 150 years of legendary service and for that occasion, the locomotive and the coaches were decorated by railfans and General Manager, ER led a small celebration before flagging off the run on it's birthday.

Here is what the train looked like in 1906 around its 40th anniversary:

and here is what it looks like today:

with new Alstom/LHB/IR cars and Bombardier/IR electric engine.

Incidentally, it still carries mail though the RPO (Railway Post Office) on the train where you could mail a letter is long gone. It is now electric traction for its entire journey from the Gangetic Delta to the foothills of the Himalayas near Shimla - the erstwhile summer capital of British India.

Until the 5 digit uniform renumbering it used to be 1 up and 2 down - the original numbers it got as the only through train on EIR (East Indian Railway) 150 years back.

I have fond memories of riding the "1 up Kalka Mail" from Delhi to Kalka in non-ac first class, our very first train ride in India, a few days after arriving in India for the 1st time, 1983. We were met on the platform at Kalka with tea and toast at about 5am, and then boarded the Simla narrow guage train.

I had a reservation to take this train from Howrah all the way to Kalka on my recent visit, but unfortunatly I became unwell and had to return home early to UK. Maybe next time !

Happy Birthday Kalka Mail !

Ed.
