20% off sale?

Amtrak currently has an up to 20% off sale. I assume that is on the base fare. With the increase in room fares is there really any savings? I have a reservation for a trip next April. It seems Amtrak hides all the discounts so there is no way to see what I actually got. I did try senior and no senior and found a difference but how do I know what the 20% off is (or even it it was applied)?

The answer is easy, if you book in a sleeper, this discount will not apply at all.

This fare sale is for "Saver" fare class coach tickets only. It is not applicable to sleeper rail fares, most fare sales aren't and this one is no exception:

"Valid for Coach seats only; no sleeper upgrades permitted."

Sleeper rail fares will be the 2nd "Value" coach bucket. Sleeper rail fares are subject to Senior and RPA discounts but not most fare sales, the occasional sleeper rail fare BOGO sale is the only consistent exception I've seen recently. Accommodation charges are not discounted. Ever.

Your rail fare/accommodation charge breakdown will be in your emailed sales receipt. It will clearly state Senior Rail Fare. An example for Everett, WA-New York booked a couple months ago for November travel (and at low bucket, btw):

1 SENIOR RAIL FARE
$277.20
1 SUPERLINER ROOMETTE
$532.00

Although even the receipt isn't showing the breakdown of the two accommodation charges. All fares are showing under train 8, train 48 says "1 VIEWLINER ROOMETTE $0.00". I wish.

You can also still see the breakdown on the website booking engine if you use the Multi-City option and look in fare details. They have unfortunately made it invisible on the regular booking option, only the bottom line price will show. You can use Multi-city for anything, it will accept just one segment.
