7 pounds of pot found on Amtrak passenger

Felony drug charges are pending against a man arrested Tuesday at the La Crosse Amtrak train station with about $30,000 worth of marijuana, according to La Crosse police.

Amtrak police in Portland, Ore., alerted local authorities that Reuben Dudenbostel, 25, of Boscobel was acting suspicious and traveling to La Crosse.

A Holmen police narcotics detection dog found 7.4 pounds of marijuana worth $29,600 in vacuum sealed bags in Dudenbostel’s bags, police said.

Not Me, I havent EVER been in that Station!! That's My Story and I'm Sticking to It! :giggle:

But Seriously, wonder why the Portland Police, who use Drug Dogs in Union Station, didn't make the Bust there??

Is this how Amtrak police roll? See something suspicious and make the police at the destination handle it? What if it were explosives meant to go off on the train? This is very unresponsible on Amtraks part. They are also just giving reasons for TSA to invade the trains more.

Old Reuben will be doing some time. This was his third offense for possession of THC here in WI. He was on probation.

Absolutely right! That pot might have exploded, and everyone on the train would have gotten the munchies. Then the cafe would have been raided until empty, and that would have been a true disaster... ... ...

Maybe that's what they were hoping for...just think of all the extra revenue that would have generated!

7 Pounds is nothing compared to what I saw hauled off our Sleeper on the Cal Zephyr last August in Reno. 4 local undercovers were standing by the door when we pulled in. They flashed their badges to the Attendent and proceeded to haul a Mex couple and their 2 giant suitcases onto the platform. One of the suitcases was billowing full of assorted bundles. What was interesting is the Attendent, another passenger and me were allowed to stay right in the middle of this. Better than a TV cop show :)

We quickly learned the couple had raised a flag in Sacramento when they paid cash for a 1 way Sleeper to Chicago and the alert Agent called ahead to Reno where these problems are usuallyy dealt with.

Maybe the Amtrak cops in Portland looked up Dudenbostel's Wisconsin rap sheet before train departure and figured that if the bust went down in Wisconsin the perp wouid then face a third-strike sentence.

Makes sense and a good point. It took me less than a minute to run him.

You mean they didn't pay with their AGR mastercard to get points?

In this case they used cash to maximize their Department of Corrections Frequent Guest Program Points :p

I think that the Amtrak Cops only wanna handle "big stuff" such as Bomb Threats, and If You See Something Say Something... Who knows maybe someone saw something and said it. :giggle: :)

They're technically federal law enforcement, and pot possession is still a federal crime. If they pass it off to someone other agency, there might be a different state policy on enforcement and/or laws, as well as willingness (or not) to prosecute a federal crime when state laws/policy differ. Heck - Washington and Colorado just decriminalized recreational use, although I'm not sure about trafficking.

Are you all aluding to that Amtrak Guest Rewards points can be used to get some weed?! Oh my. I'd like to know if its true that cannibus has theraputic effect on certain mood disorders, like bipolar or depression. Maybe if they issolate something, people like me an finally have peace with our trains and railroads, and everything else in life.

That's why the police are always inspecting in RNO! Was that couple nervous when they knew they were going to get busted?

It might also be that there are certain jurisdictions it is harder to get a conviction for (say) pot smuggling in. There are probably a few places on the west coast that you'd have trouble getting a jury to convict, while I don't think it's quite so "relaxed" in the midwest.

Very. They were fluthering and bluthering excuses as the undercovers interrogated them about what was in the bags and as soon as the discovery was made and the bracelets snapped into place, they weren't the happiest folks on the platform.

They should have checked their bags - but if you do, make sure it weighs under 50 pounds or you'll have to rearrange the weight! :giggle:
What was even more comical is they were in a Roomette and shortly before Reno had asked the Conductor about upgrading to a Bedroom; he said he'd start the paperwork and have that taken care of shortly after the train left Reno. They ended up getting upgraded alright :giggle:

Yeah

Right to the gray bar motel, and they were given silver bracelets for the trip!
