Was forced to take the Eagle from AUS-TAY today for lunch @ a REAL bar-b-Q joint, Louie Muellars! (It was on Diners/Drive-Ins and Dives on the Travel Channel!)Best smoked meat in texas which makes it the best in the world! :D

#22 was on time, rolled up to TAY, I was surprised by the large number of pax, lots of folks going to CHI! Had the usual consist, one engine, trans-dorm/revenue sleeper/diner-lounge/ssl!!!! :) and three coaches! If Im not mistaken one of our members was gonna ride TPL-CLB-TPL on #22 today!

Had a great day in beautiful downtown Taylor, lots of old buildings and a really nice Library where I hung out since it was AC and it was 90+ again! What happened to fall?

#21 was about 15 minutes late pullling in, Julie was spot on! Waited in the picnic table and shed "station" since the UP Depot is "off limits" to civilians!

(Taylor is a large UP crew operating base for freights and lots of switching/car storage etc. here! The consist was one engine/trans-dorm/revenue sleeper, a real diner! :) ,even if the crew gets off in AUS, three coaches and the two private cars below!

Todays Eagle out of St. Louis had two private cars attached on the back, a sleeper and a dome/lounge car! Creative Charters was the name on the cars, the sleeper was named after a female, something Henry and the dome/lounge was the Patrickk Henry and had a platform on the back with lounge chairs!!   The conductor told me that they get alot of these in the fall from CHI and STL, these cars are out of Houston however? They were very nicely restored, looked new, the attendant in Austin let me peek into the lounge/dome, it looked like something the President or some billionaire might ride, nicest Ive ever seen!! Must be nice!! :( A nice day trip for $11, 400 AGR rail points, a great lunch, a norther blew in while I was waiting (20 degress cooler!), guess I might be forced to do it again before fall is over and after my trip to Canada in two weeks for Thanksgiving!

Great report! :) (You trying to beat my $24.60 point run of today? )

I wonder why 21 & 22 needs a trans-dorm? There is no baggage car to transition to - baggage is carried in the lower level of a coach/baggage car!

Nuh uh, either Kreuz's Market in Lockhart, or Salt Lick in Dripping Springs. A bit hard to get to on Amtrak thou, so Kudos to the Taylor trip!!

Im not sure Dave but both trains had them today, maybe there were lots of deaheading crew or something, there were a large number of Amtrak staff that got on/off in Austin, seemed like more than usual, also we had 3 conductors, 2 were regulars I knew, maybe 1 was a trainee?? And yeah, but you got the cheap points this summer in PDX with the turnaround across the river to Oregon!! :p

Hey. I was on both of those trains today also. I boarded #22 at the next stop in Temple and got off in Cleburne. I returned a few hours later on #21. Jim got off on the stop before I got on and on the return I got off on the stop before he got on so we rode the same two trains today but didn't meet.

I took some video of the trip which I'm uploading right now. It will take awhile to do this and I don't have any fancy music to go along with it but I will post it tomorrow when it's done.

I did notice the extra crew onboard the train. I also got some shots of the Creative Custom cars.

Well the crew still needs a place to sleep and it gives the conductor a place to work, without taking over a table in the cafe car. The Trans/Dorm isn't just about getting to the baggage car.

Not to mention that having a Trans/Dorm on the head end helps tremendously to keep the smoke from entering the first car on the train. Without a Trans/Dorm, the head car catches all the smoke as the pass through doors don't do a good job of stopping it.

I noticed today that the crew had taken over four tables in the cafe car.
Look forward to your video/report Stan, its evident you didnt miss #21, Id noticed the large amount of OBS on the train too, maybe, just maybe, they are training some new staff so it doesnt take 2 years to start the daily Eagle/Sunset through Texas! Did you get to talk with anyone from the private cars, we only had a couple of minutes in AUS, they were in a hurry to get going, I did enjoy my brief look, sure wouldnt mind a ride if I had the bucks!

How long did you have to wait in Cleburne for #21, not long Id guess based on what Julie was saying this afternoon! Guess it was hot up that way too till the norther blew in! :)
