Hi everyone, I've been reading a lot of the threads here with great interest. I'm flying to the US next week from New Zealand and travelling across the country on Amtrak. I've been to the USA a number of times, but I thought that this time rather than flying over the middle (and dealing with the annoyances of domestic air travel in the US) I would take the train. I'm riding Amtrak from Los Angeles to Tampa with stops in Chicago and Washington DC. I've had this booked since the beginning of the year and I can't wait! I have a roomette booked for all of the segments.

I will try to write a travelogue with my impressions of the trip. I'm especially looking forward to the trip on the Southwest Chief.

Cheers,

Grant

Hi,

Welcome to the site. Good luck on your visit to America, it will be interesting to hear how your Amtrak rides go. If you do a trip report, it would be good to hear info about the cost of the roomettes, etc. As you did book a while ago, I wonder if you got a good deal on the prices... there is currently some discussion about the price advantages or drawbacks of booking early.

Bon Voyage!

Welcome back to the USA, and thanks for coming. Coast-to-coast by rail is quite a journey. I've done it a few times and cherish the memories.

Grant, you are going to have a wonderful trip!! There is NOTHING better than watching the country go by outside your window.

Looking forward to hearing about your trip! Also wouldn't mind hearing how the forum helped you plan your trip too. Did you use information from posts here to help you choose your routes, etc?
