We complain about trains that run three times a week. Such are not very uncommon in the Indian subcontinent, specially for luxury trains.

However, there is one lowly train which is scheduled to run only twice a month and seems to be doing well. Although one must add that it is probably not a great idea for anyone who does not look quite South Asian to try to brave it.

The train is Quetta - Zahedan Passenger which runs from Quetta, which is the rail head for Spin Boldak border with Afghanistan, to Zahedan in Iran, crossing the border west of Kohi-Taftan at a station called Border Pillar! In proper Amtrak style, there are 1.5 hour stops both at Kohi Taftan and Border Pillar. Also curiously, this train apparently operates on Pakistan time in Iran!

Here is its published time table:

BTW, there is now through Container service with transhipment from Standard to Broad Gauge at Zahedan.

Do NOT stray too far from the platform...or you'll be spending the fortnight in Kohi Taftan!

I wonder if the equipment is used on other services on the other days, or if they just have really poor rolling stock utilizitaion.

Same for the staff, are these hired to work just a handful of days a month, or do they twiddle their thumbs on the other days?

Any idea what sort of equipment is used on this train? Seeing it runs over night, I wonder if there is sleeping accomodation and maybe even some sort of a restaurant or cafeteria car?

Or is it just some clapped out ancient railbus?
