I've got a sleeper reservation from Chicago to Portland, and would like to add another passenger.
When I called Amtrak's 800 number they insisted that they couldn't modify the current reservation, but had to cancel it, charge me a 25% cancellation fee, and then do the booking again. I'm sure I've done this before without cancelling the original reservation. What are the secret words I need to whisper? "Open sleeper ticket"? "Coach Seat"?
As a Guest Rewards member, I've got a companion coupon that I'd like to use for this. I assume that's a legal use for the coupon, as it's essentially buying a coach seat to go with a sleeper reservation, but the coupon does say that it needs to be used at the time the reservation is originally made. Is that always true?
