hi i am thinking about taking the amtrak adirondack to montreal from albany ny in october and are there any foot rests in the seats and how long does the border crossing usually take?

My answers are maybe and depends. I took the Adirondack from NYP to MTR in September and there were a lot of passengers going to Montreal, so we were put in the Amfleet I cars, which do not have foot rests. (I think AlanB had the same experience the week before I went). On the return trip, there were not as many passengers and we were able to fit in the 2 Amfleet II cars, and we had foot rests.

Customs went fairly quickly northbound and not so quickly southbound. Again, it will depend on the passenger load and whether the agents have to search luggage, etc.

Josh,

As Penny noted, it will be pot luck on which type of car you get seated in on this train. And that type affects the foot rest question.

It's also really pot luck as far as the border crossing is concerned. The more people crossing the border, the longer it takes. But there is no way for you to know until you get there, just how many are going over the border. After that, it depends on how thorough the agents want to be and how many problems they encounter.

I've been on trains that cleared faster than the allotted time for customs, trains that cleared basically within the allotted time, and even a few that went 1 to 2 hours past the allotted time.

Even the Amfleets Is are more comfortab;e than airline Coach, despite not having foot rests. Take the train, it's great! I don't know if the Adirondack gets the Great Dome this fall.
