April 19, 2009. I would appreciate any advice, tips, etc. about riding Silver Meteor from Alex Va to Jesup GA Depart 4/20 and Return 5/6. Round trip fare was $176 with senior discount.

If one waits until boarding to ask about a sleeper, any suggestions about the most effective way to do. I've heard the crews like to use them as much as they can and will release unreserved ones begrudgingly.

I plan to rental a car in Jesup, GA and have already checked the Internet sites. Any particular car rental agencies you could recommend there.

Thanks, CharlesDam

it might be possible to upgrade a sleeper but they do used them for onboard crew memebers since there is no longer a crew car.

It depends on how willing you are to take a chance on getting a sleeper. If you really want a sleeper, book it ASAP. If none are available then you have only the option of trying when you get on board. I've taken the SM several times and always had a good trip but always booked a bedroom or roomette ahead of time.

just remember there might be sleeper rooms available but the conductor might say there are none when in fact there is cause not all conductors want to do the extra paper work.

This isn't an onboard upgrade... there would be no paper work here just a conductor doing them a favor.
I think that you may be confusing this topic with another LongTrain, as Charles here is talking about an onboard upgrade.

whoa okay I know I posted that in the can you board your sleeper early or so I thought lol whoops. Thanks for catching that. I guess it was later then I thought.

I don't think that any roomettes set aside for use by the crew, are available for onboard passenger upgrades for any reason. I mean, what would Amtrak do with the crew members originally assigned to that roomette, make them sleep in the dining car?
