Hello, I understand that if I want to redeem an AGR award for sleeper, I can bring along a guest NO CHARGE AT ALL TO THEM.

However, what happens--do I get two tickets? Let's suppose I (primary AGR member) cannot go, will my guest still be able to go, EVEN THOUGH HE/SHE IS NOT AN AGR MEMBER? Does he/she have his own ticket? Will conductors get mad or question the traveler?

Yes, you will get 2 tickets - 1 with traveler #1's name and 1 with travel #2's name. And yes, #2 could go even if #1 does not. (They still have a ticket to travel and for that room!)

As an example, I traveled from Birmingham thru Washington, Chicago and Portland to LA last year. My traveling companion could only travel from Washington to Portland. He had tickets for all 4 trains, but only used 2 of them. I was alone for the other 2. Sometimes the conductor will want to collect both tickets (as happened to me on train #1), but sometimes they will not (as happened to me on train #4). So if both do not go, make sure the one who does has both tickets.!

One passenger can also get off at an intermediate destination. Last week Mrs. Ispolkom and I had tickets from Washington to Minot. As she is short of vacation, she got off the train in St. Paul, while I continued to the Magic City. No muss, no fuss.

Just to be sure, let's say that you had another person join you in PDX. That person would have to purchase a coach ticket to Los Angeles, but could ride with you in the sleeper, correct?

No. It depends on the train crew, but folks with coach tickets generally aren't allowed forward of the diner (or aft of it when the sleepers are on the rear). You'd have to include them on your sleeper reservation (which would be free in an AGR award, or low bucket for the railfare if paying (regardless of what the current bucket is for coach seats)).

Technically, the following can't and shouldn't be done - but it could work!

The second ticket is for "Mark" to travel with you. "Mark" can only travel with you to PDX, but must leave (for some reason) in PDX, but "Bill" wants to join you from PDX to LAX in the sleeper. Assuming that they do not check ID's onboard (and I've personally have not), "Bill" could easily pass for "Mark" - but I doubt "Sue" or "Sally" could pass for "Mark"! ;)
