Dinty Moore!
No, they are actual meals. Just less of a selection. The pasta meal is always one of the choices.
I was really replying to the post before yours, about a second dinner northbound where it would not be a pre-planned service, not the express dinner service into NOL, although in rereading it I see that the poster was specifically referencing 19, not 20.

Another day, same story. 20 will cross the NC-VA border around 10 am, over 5 hours late. Most of the damage was between Meridian and Atlanta.

Yes but the delays are spreading north ward. Lost another hour ATL - CLT. Maybe NS piedmont division is getting stacked up freights ?

I'll be in Danville next Wednesday (overnight tie up en route to Atlanta and loading up my buggy with some "Welch's" at three different "grocery stores" - one near Quantico and two near Charlottesville ). If #20 (18) is doing it's usual of late, just might slide over to the Depot (staying at a Hampton within a mile of such) and "railfan" it.

From the Googlemobile, it looks like Amtrak uses a portion of the SRY station, which appears to be part of a historical and cultural center labeled "The Crossings" that also includes an SRY office building.

20 (18) is estimated here 946a, or 5' 30" late. I just might do a little fanning on my way out of here enroute to Atlanta.

Well volks, I'm not "too much into this "picher takin stuff" but here is the 340ML #20 (18).

This included my first view of a V-Chow. Of particular interest is V-snooze now renamed New River - and liveried in Phase III.

Now on to Atlanta - and "not exactly" on 19 (19).

20(1) is estimated to arrive NYP roughly 8'30" down. 20(31) arrived NYP 9'20" down. 20 has really taken a beating over the last month, with 8 arrivals being over 5 hours late. The average delays is 3'30" and there are only 3 arrivals with delays under 1'30".

Train 19 hasn't fared much better. While it only has 6 arrivals over 5 hours late, the average delay is 4'07' mins late and there is only 1 arrival under 2 hours late. It also has the only delay in double digits.

Most of the delays are due to freight interference and congestion. However, it puts the trains in an unfavorable light. It if oft delayed and it costs quite a bit to run. Personally, I still think it is worth it.

The incredible delays and unreliable service is unfortunate. My in-laws wanted to travel Atlanta to Tocoaa and back to visit friends, but an early evening train ride turning into a wee-hours-of-the-morning ride isn't going to happen. Not to mention waiting at the cramped ATL station. I'm sure Mr Anderson is not pleased with the timekeeping on 19/20. But there is really nothing he can do about it, right?

With the consistently incredibly late trains, are they able to service and turn the properly at NOL and NYP? I know 20 has a scheduled turnaround of just over 24 hrs at NYP, while 19 has a scheduled turn of around 12 hours. I know one year they cancelled the Auto Trains for a few days just to let them catch up. Should Amtrak be thinking of doing that to the Crescents?

A couple of days, #20 left NOL 3 to 5 hours late account of the turnaround requirement. Have not seen any departure delays out of NYP.

They're just going to get late again pretty much immediately. The Auto Train doesn't have consistent, large delays en route (I think) so it works. The delays currently aren't large enough that force them to depart NYP late.

So VLIs are being refurbished now?

Did traffic significantly increase along this route or did NS increase the size of their trains? It seems as though there isn't enough room or time for all of the traffic. Sidings are often too short or overflowing. Trains often stall.

This isn't limited to the NOL-BHM portion.

Freight is the disrupter. I rode 20 departing New Orleans on time 6/8. We were on time all the way to just before Meridian, MS. Beginning there and all the way to Atlanta we were stopped for freight trains and we followed slow freight trains losing about 3 hours until about an hour before Atlanta we were stopped by a broken down freight ahead of us. In fact, they borrowed our passenger engine to pull the freight out of the way and then they had to run brake tests and other safety tests once the engine was reconnected to us. In all we lost an additional 4 hours and arrived Atlanta 7 hours late at 2 AM. We did not make up any of the time but basically kept the estimated schedule time(7 hours late) all the way to New York City arriving at 9 PM instead of the scheduled 1:45 PM. All of this delay was due to freight congestion and break downs between Meridian and Atlanta.
