Yes, the "speeding" train was "barreling along." and its "driver" couldn't swerve to avoid the truck.

At least we have one less inept truck driver to deal with
Unfortunately there are about a thousand times more commercial trucks on the road than passenger trains on the rails. If they all cancel each other out Amtrak will have no more trains left to run while the commercial truck fleet will barely notice the dent in available tonnage.

Umm small correction required in the headline-

Dump truck gets in the way of Amtrak Train and Hits It.

Just to be clear, you're making this up. The quoted article includes no such language, and in fact specifically

refers to eyewitness accounts that the truck driver ignored a stop sign at the grade crossing. There is no

implication that the train was at fault. I understand that other articles about different incidents have made

such inferrances, but it's not fair to suggest that it happened in this case.

There is nothing inaccurate or misleading about the Thread Title or the headline of the

linked article. OTOH, your suggestion that the dump truck hit the train has no discernable

basis in fact. To say that an Amtrak train hit a dump truck is factual, straightforward, and does

not assign blame.

Trains are rarely at fault in these accidents. But with one dead and many injured, it's a sad day all around.

Is 91 on the ground or is it still on the rails?
I saw the noon news while I was at the gym and it looked like 91 was still on the tracks.

Here is an updated article. http://www.cfnews13.com/content/news/cfnews13/news/article.html/content/news/articles/cfn/2012/11/29/amtrak_train_hits_du.html?cmpid=breaking

There were 11 people injured (not including the deceased truck driver), one of whom is a crew member.

There were no cross bars, but witnesses state that the truck driver did not stop before crossing the tracks.

Thanks. The driveway, locomotive, and truck cab remains are clearly scorched meaning there was fire probably from fuel. I'm also guessing that since the train came to rest on single track, the Northbounds for the day, plus the SB Silver Meteor, will be bustituded for the portion to Tampa and/or Miami.

Looking at google maps it appears that the collision likely occured at "Glenrose Rd" http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl which is nothing more than a driveway into two properties. A cul-de-sac 200 foot away could easily have been extended to eleminate this crossing.

Darwin award for the dump truck driver.

The property owners which accesses this road, the developer who put in the cul-de-sac, and the city/county "planning" officials all deserve recognition of a case of crainal rectosis.

Condolences and simpathies to the family of the driver, and crew and passengers of the train.

Penny's original supposition is correct, it is 91(28). Lead engine 60 is reported to have extensive fire damage and second engine 144 is reportedly damaged also.

Several pax have been treated for minor injuries. 98(29) is trapped south of KIS and 97(28) is trapped behind 91(28). Bustitutions are in the works, I have heard.

Sometimes people do dumb things and in this case, pay the ultimate price. :(

May we at AU show some compassion for all those who died and were hurt in this accident. :(
Bill:

Not a chance with this bunch. I agree with you but, essentially "we" are far too jaded for compassion.

Maybe our misplaced compassion is what helped enable so many unsafe commercial truck drivers in the first place.
Amen to that.
Yeah that's how it is. If we would not be so damned compassionate, there would be far fewer such accidents. That logic is easy to follow.

In fact, here's what we should do: find out if the trucker had any kids, then call them up and point out how stupid their daddy was. That'll teach em!

If I'm ever careless enough to drive a commercial truck or construction vehicle into the path of an oncoming train you have my explicit permission to call my entire family and tell them what an ***** I was. Or maybe you could tell us what sort of safety minded solution you envision catering to the needs of the innocent without hurting the feelings of the grossly incompetent.

On the other hand, a grossly negligent truck driver was responsible for injuring at least 11 others. That kind of accident could have possible killed people on a train. Then his gross negligence would have been responsible for multiple deaths. I have no sympathy for that kind of behavior or for the people who commit it any more than I would have sympathy for a truck driver (or other driver) running a red light and killing innocent people in a car.

Would you have compassion for him if he killed some kids on the train?

I don't have a solution, but I am not idiotic enough to suggest "Maybe our misplaced compassion is what helped enable so many unsafe commercial truck drivers in the first place."
