If I go from Atlanta to Toronto (and stayed overnight in NYC on my own dime, would that be allowed as a 1 zone AGR route? Amtrak doesn't show that as a through ticket at all. I guess I could do ATL - Buffalo on Crescent/LSL then overnight in Buffalo and take train to Toronto.

You can't redeem an AGR award to Toronto. The Niagara Falls to Toronto segment of the Maple Leaf is operated by Via Rail and Via does not accept AGR award tickets. The best you can do is book an AGR trip to Niagara Falls NY then a paid trip from there to Toronto.

As for AGR, they typically do not allow a contiguous trip to include an overnight stay (with a very few exceptions). You could book AGR 1 zone ATL to NYP, then paid from NYP to Toronto. Another option is AGR 1 zone ATL to NYP, then NE Zone NYP to NYF, then paid to Toronto.

Actually, you can book on Amtrak all the way to NFS (Niagara Falls, ON). This gets you across the border if you don't want to buy the VIA segment from Amtrak for some reason (ticketed from "CBN" to TWO).

I just did this trip... Atlanta to Toronto this week. I just booked atl to NYP on points then bought a ticket the next day on the Maple Leaf.... Will be interested to know if I could have gotten part of that free.

From what I've been told, the AGR reward ends when you have an overnight stopover, except in New Orleans. Some people seem to have gotten lucky with one of the AGR agents at times, though. Good luck!
