See this article titled "CAF signs Saudi North-South Railway passenger train contract"in the Railway Gazette International regarding Saudi order for diesel Passenger Trains capable of 200kph (125mph). Apparently these puppies can carry the passenger's automobiles along. If that is the case they would seem to be ideal equipment to start auto trains on various lower usage routes. Perhaps a version of just the cars can be used in regular trains too.

Of course the details of what loading/unloading facilities they need would be significant, and the usual buff strength issues too. I believe Saudi Railways use UIC standard, but perhaps George knows for sure.

Interesting project overall...I wonder if there is a plan to expand the north-south railway project over the border? Looking at the project, that line is going to go right up to the border with Jordan (and with no offense to the town, ending a train in Haditha is up there with ending one in St. Albans: It may make operational sense, but there's not much of a market there) and then seems to, at least for the moment, truncate there.
