We'd like to store our hand luggage for several hours during the day before we leave NYP that afternoon on the LSL. I'm aware that one can do this at baggage claim with your Amtrak ticket, but what's the current per bag fee?

Thanks!

IIRC it's $4 an HR. Not sure. But if there are some valuables in there you should just keep them on your person and haul them around if you can. It's not worth risk having something stolen.

Some of the workers there are indolent and useless. They don't like it if you show up with a 20 dollar bill. If you can do so, have smaller bills. Don't let them send you to a retail outlet for change. You will be required to buy something. If they are rude or obnoxious, ask for the station manager.

I'm sorry Steve had a bad experience with the Baggage Check

staff at New York Penn Station. I have had the opposite.

I have checked bags there at least 50 times and have never

had any bad experiences.

I think if you are booked the next day on an Amtrak train

to a destination that has baggage service, you can check

your bags in advance without charge. You will not have

access to the bags until your destination.

When I checked my bags down to PHL in the beginning of the month the staff was ok. He told me that my train didn't have baggage service and that he could put them on a train at some point during the day.

If it's just for a few hours, and you're in a sleeper, find a Red Cap, give him your bags and $10, and ask that they be taken to the train and put in your room.

He can NOT do that as the train will be in Sunnyside and Red Caps don't have access to Sunnyside. Trains are pulled into NYP about 20 minutes before departure..

So you could do it and get laughed at or he could take your bags and if you find the red cap hope he or she still has them. You'd be better off checking them for a few hours.

Slow down, Acela 150. It never hurts to be courteous in disagreement. And, it makes it less embarassing when you are mistaken, as here.

Red Caps all over the system, and yes, in NY too, will often take your bags well in advance of the train, and get them aboard for you. Most recently: December 28 at LAUPT, handed my bags to the Red Cap at 10a and went for lunch across the street, and to visit a couple of the old churches there. Came back for train 2 4 hours later, and my bags were in my room. Magic!

My home station is Phila, and I do it there all the time.

Just because you haven't heard of something, doesn't mean it can't be done... Depends on the 'Cap, and on the tip...

I've heard of it. I don't encourage it. There are certain stations you can do it at and NYP is not one of them.. It's the busiest in the nation.. A good red cap will make sure you go to the train with your luggage. At PHL they put your luggage on a cart and put the train number and time on the cart. The red cap will give you a stub with a time and the name of you red cap. PHL is also not a termination point. Unless it's a Keystone Service train.

At NYP you would have a better chance of getting to your train before your bags if you chose to do so. Red Caps there often get tied up with other trains.

Fair enough. A much more pleasant reply! Thank you.

I have done it at NYP, never had a problem, but we can agree to disagree. I tend to take risks like this, and of course, they don't always pay off.

Can anyone share any more experiences with storing bags at NYP? I'm arriving this Friday afternoon at around 3 and will need to store them for about 4 hours.

I did something similar in October, arrived at NYP around 9am, stored bags until about 3pm. I don't remember the precise price per bag, but the $4.50 someone mentioned sounds about right. I just went up to the baggage counter as said I'd like to store a few bags for a while, and they took the bags, gave me claim checks, and then I retrieved them using the checks later. Pretty easy.

I know this thread is over 3 years old, so I just wanted to check if things are still the same, or if there have been any changes to the checked baggage policy at NYP. I going to have several hours between a connection, and I was going to get a ticket to visit the 9/11 Memorial, but I can't take my bags there, so I would need to check them.

Just as a reminder that if you are traveling in a sleeper or First Class you may use the Acela Lounge in NYP and store your bags there for free. Or if you have AGR higher status or coupons you may also use the Acela Lounge and its bag storage facilities.

Yes, but is it secure enough for non-valuables? Is someone at least keeping an eye on them?

I have no idea if someone is keeping an eye on them or not, but my experience has been that at least my things have not disappeared from that storage room at NYP Club Acela, where I have left my baggage for an entire day from early morning to late evening, several times. Of course as Jim says YMMV :)

I would not leave anything such as expensive electronic equipment, etc. but as Jis noted, we too have stored our things there for several hours without a problem. The storage room is located near the front of the lounge and in sight of the front desk, but I doubt they are inclined to pay much attention to it. I guess you have to trust human nature and believe that the majority of people are honest. (I always store our bags on a high shelf to avoid ease of access by short criminal midgets.. :p :p
