Can someone direct us to the topic posting where deluxe bedroom preferences were discussed a while back?

We have bedroom E on a CZ trip from Chicago to Sacramento in November and I seem to remember someone writing that E is not a very good set-up.

I want to see if it's possible to change the room letter if that indeed is the case. I'm trying to recall if the consensus was that A or C was better?

But maybe it's too hard to change in any event, tho we haven't printed our tickets yet. And I suppose that the differences between all the rooms are at the end of the day pretty minor?

Help appreciated!

B through E are the same setup on a Superliner. Bedroom A is the one you want to avoid if possible (if you have two people booked in the room). Here's a link to the room layouts ...

As you can see, bedroom A is "cut off" a bit, making it smaller. The rest of the bedrooms are the same. E might be a bit noisy since it's near the stairwell.

Our personal favorites have been E & D, E being the best. We have not used the other bedrooms.

E is right next to the stairs & coffee station, in the center of the car. D is to the left of E. Some say it's too noisy being in E, we did not find that to be an issue. Most say having a room in the center of the car makes the ride smoother. The A bedroom is smaller, right near the car door. This may be too noisy for some. Enjoy your trip!

This topic keeps coming up every few months. Here are some of the many threads discussing this:

Room E rawks! We have room E for our whole honeymoon. I love being right by the coffee and juice and the stairwell to go downstairs in. I find it to be smoother too! You can't go wrong in room E.

E is the best!

B, C and D are the same as E - and all rate 1/2% below the best!

Avoid Bedroom A at all costs!

I agree with all the earlier opinions; however, I always prefer Bedroom D over E. There will be more "hall" noise in E since the upstairs Roomette toliet and coffee station are at the top of the stairway leading to the lower level. That stairway is on the other side of the wall by the sofa bed in Room E. I originally started using D since "in the beginning" most if not all of the sleepers were positioned with the roomettes in the leading end meaning that the sofa in Bedroom D was facing the direction of travel in most configurations. That is not necessarily true today and I understand the train 421 sleeper faces one direction from Chicago to San Antonio and is reversed from San Antonio to Los Angeles. I don't know that to be fact but one rail fan trip report I read indicated this and stated that the coach passengers had to reverse their seats after departing San Antonio to face direction of travel. But I am "game" and will be using the Bedroom D on both the Southwest Chief and Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited in the next two weeks.

Once again into the breach.... I am contrarian!

When I am traveling alone in a room, which is frequent; I enjoy Bedroom "A" as I find it more private. I do not hear the conversations or loud noises from the next room as I do when I am in E. I also enjoy the sound and feel of the trucks underneath. While the living space is great for me, getting into the shower with the bed down is almost acrobatic. :eek:hboy:

Mind you, when I am traveling the rails with my partner (once a year per agreement), we always manage "E". This fall we are on the Empire Builder with my parents and they have "D", so I hope to experience the sliding door open for once - daytime only naturally.

Thanks for the comments. But you all raise another interesting question. Assume for the moment that E is indeed the best choice, followed by D, C, B down to A.

The way that Amtrak has set up the reservation system, E normally goes for the LOWEST price and A for the HIGHEST price.

If Amtrak was sharp (i.e. having someone regularly read everything on this forum) wouldn't it set up the system so A would go first at the lowest price? And E ends up going at the highest bid?

What a set up...........

We had room E for both overnight legs of our honeymoon trip earlier this month - no noise from the coffee station that I could hear. Perhaps we had fellow travelers who knew to keep it down if they were getting coffee before 6:00am or so when I would wake up.

We've had mostly E bedrooms (as we tend to book early) but have had a few D's and C's too. We didn't notice that much difference. The E bedroom is right by the stairs and coffee machine but on the other hand you don't have people in rooms on both sides.

I too am a fan of Bedroom E. Mrs. Ispolkom, strangely, prefers the family bedroom. We just booked a trip on the Capitol Limited for next May (getting in before the end of the 10% rebate) and got Bedroom B, which will be a new one for me.

Yeah, maybe I should retract that! How does the phrase go, "Be careful what you wish for!"

Amtrak is sharp. They offer the best accomodations to the first travelers who give them their money. If I pay for a trip 11 months out, Amtrak got paid way in advance so I expect that besides cost, there is a benefit to buying early. As for the A bedroom that everyone seems to despise; Its not that much smaller than the other bedrooms. The corner of the room goes at an angle so you enter the bathroom at the hall side. The space where the chair sits is tighter but its the same size as are the beds. On most of the trips that we have been on its seldom that we see bedroom A occupied.

As far as BR A, I've only glanced in as I walked by. BR E I had on the CONO,SWC,CS & TE, & it was great. But hell, BR D is only inches from E, so how different can it be?
