I kinda splurged on business class on the L.A. to S.D. leg of trip from Chicago. I wanna look like I know what I'm doing when I approach the train. So, where do I go? Do business class people "line up" at a different place in the station? And am I assuming correctly that seats face forward when going south from L.A.?

Business class is always the car by the engine, no matter which direction the train is running, either engine first or cab car first. So look for the engine and the next car is the BC car. :)

The train pulls into LAX one way either engine first or cab car first, and departs the other way, Example. lets say the Surfliner pulls in Engine first into LA, then it will be departing LA cab car first for the trip south. As far as for the seats, Im not sure if they flip the seats while in LA.

There is roped off line on the platform next to the station for business class.

I have usually greatly enjoyed business class on the Surfliner betw. LAX to San Diego and have done it about 4-6 times. One time though, a large group of retired ladies were making a terrible racket! They were so excited about their group trip. There were at least a dozen of them. It was a din, even with my best headphones, and I ended up moving to coach which was more mellow. But as I said, usually business class on the Surfliner is a real treat. You enjoy!

Ah ok, I wasnt sure. I would change seats too. I can do the backwards thing in the dining car, aka a short period, but I cant do it on a long period of time.

Engines face away from LAX, so if you're going LA to SD, the train will be engine first. As you walk down the tunnel from the Union Station waiting room, there are pairs of ramps leading to the tracks: "A" ramps will be on your left, "B" ramps on your right. Business Class pax usually use the "A" ramp, the huddled masses use "B." So, if your train is departing on track 8, ramp 8A will be on your left and 8B will be on your right.
